On Saturday at Doomben the Les Bridge-trained Hot Danish became a dual Group 1 winner when she claimed a classy win in the $650,000 Group 1 Doomben 10,000 (1350m).
Nothin’ Leica Dane mare Hot Danish had a sensational run on the inside rail after jumping from barrier two with jockey Tim Clark, who rode the six-year-old to perfection, settling her in fourth place behind early leader Paprika at the 1000m mark.
With 600m to go the field bunched up and Hot Danish was trapped on the inside, but this proved to be the best position as Paprika began to tire, eventually fading to finish dead last, and Hot Danish ($5.50 EF) was able to move out from behind and storm to the lead. She kicked away in an expertly timed performance at the 200m mark to secure a decisive 1 ¼ length victory over the gallant Whobegotyou ($8) with equal $5.50 favourite Melito just a short neck further away in an honest third.
The Mark Kavanagh-trained Whobetgotyou, first-up after a solid spring campaign ending in October last year, was impressive moving into second position after settling worse than mid-field, hoop Michael Rodd charging Whobegotyou forward on the outside with 600m left to travel.
Hot Danish hadn’t had a run since she sprinted home to win the Group 1 All Aged Stakes (1400m) at Randwick on April 24, and did well to make it two Group 1 successes in as many starts.
She has now won 14 of her 25 career races for an impressive $1,929,830 in prizemoney. While Whobegotyou and Melito now move on to the $1 million Stradbroke Handicap (1400m) at Eagle Farm on June 12, for which Whobegotyou is now the hot $3.30 early favourite with [iasbet], Hot Danish will be sent for a rest in the paddock before the spring.
Other highlight events at Doomben last Saturday included the $125,000 Group 3 Premier’s Cup (2200m) won by the Robert Heathcote-trained Tabulate, and the $150,000 Group 3 Grand Prix Stakes (2200m) where improving three-year-old Kutchinsky claimed victory in his first run in Queensland.
The next feature meeting of the Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival takes place at Eagle Farm this Saturday, when the esteemed course hosts the Treasury Casino QLD Oaks Day. To check out the early odds for the headline race, the $400,000 Group 1 Queensland Oaks (2400m), visit [iasbet] today!
