On Thursday night Canterbury Park racecourse held one of their thrilling twilight race meetings, with the feature race of the night, the $100 000 Listed Canterbury BMW Classic (1100m) taken out by the Con Karakatsanis-trained News Alert.
Sydney sprinter News Alert ($6) claimed a close victory ahead of the hot pre-race favourite, the Peter Snowden-trained Pinwheel with Kenny’s World ($9) finishing off the trifecta in the sprint.
Four-year-old Pinwheel just missed out on securing his fourth successive victory, but it was a great resurgence to top form for five-year-old News Alert after he was scratched last minute on New Year’s Day from the Carrington Stakes for signs of lameness from a sore heel. News Alert has now won seven of this 25 career starts.
The other highly fancied runner heading into the race was Gai Waterhouse’s Bank Robber, the $3.10 second favourite just missed out on a placing finishing a neck back in fourth after leading in the early stages of the race before carrying the top weight tiered him over the final stages.
