Matthew Williams-trained Flying Tessie has won the final race on Melbourne Cup Day for 2009 in only her ninth start.
Ridden by Kerrin McEvoy, who rode the first winner on Derby Day last Saturday, light-weight Flying Tessie charged forth in the final 250m to claim an impressive two and a half length victory ahead of runner-up Spirited Halo and third placegetter Bonindi.
The race favourite at $4.40, Rodney Douglas’ Huxssen failed to place, his first defeat at that distance.
Early leader and pacesetter Produced held an uncontested lead of six lenghts with 600m to go, before the field tightened on the home straight and Produced lost the lead to Flying Tessie who stormed up the outside.
A 16 horse field contested the event following the scratchings of Silky Smooth, Rhyno Chaser,Blackhall and Testa Rocketa.
