Winx Ready for Apollo Stakes 2017 Return

It is all system’s go for the much-awaited return of Australia’s glamour mare Winx who returns to racing Saturday week in Sydney’s 2017 Apollo Stakes on the back of good lead-up trial form.

Chris Waller has been giving his $9.3 million earner plenty of praise ahead of her first-up run at Royal Randwick on February 11 in the $250,000 Group 2 Apollo Stakes (1400m).

The season’s first Group 1 race may be running on the same date with the CF Orr Stakes in Melbourne, but all eyes will firmly be set on the Group 2 in Sydney as Winx shoots for her 14th consecutive turf triumph.

The racing fans have waited with bated breath since the five-year-old daughter of Street Cry secured back-to-back Cox Plate championship wins with a record eight length success over Hartnell in the Moonee Valley classic last October.

Waller brought her back into the public eye on January 17 for her first new season trial over 900m at Rosehill where she cruised to a third behind subsequent first-up Group 2 Expressway Stakes winner Music Magnate.

The wonder mare trialled again over 1000m at the Gardens earlier this week and crossed third once more, jockey Hugh Bowman never fully extending her when 2.6 lengths off Nancy (1st) and Sacred Master (2nd).

The always professional Winx looked like she was doing nothing more than getting a couple of cruisy metres in her famous legs in the Tuesday morning trial before she comes back into the full spotlight this autumn.

Waller may give her another quick gallop this weekend or next Tuesday before she jumps odds-on favourite in Apollo Stakes betting first-up attempting her sixth resuming win from seven fresh starts.

“She has matured now and whatever we ask to do, she does,” he told the Sydney Morning Herald.

“It is a case of holding her at the level where she is because she can’t really get much better.

“[She] went through the motions, settled back early to ensure she got into a nice position and [was] comfortable.”

One of the champion’s biggest fans as well as her regular rider, Bowman was also more than pleased with how Winx felt underneath him on Tuesday as he gears up to partner her in the Apollo.

“If you watch her over the final stages you’d have seen her stretching out really nicely, so ready for the races now,” he said.

The only other jockey to ride Winx since her maiden Group 1 win in the 2015 Queensland Oaks is James McDonald who was aboard for her win in that year’s Group 2 Theo Marks Stakes (1300m).

The Apollo Stakes field will also feature Winx’s regular rival Hartnell from the Godolphin stable who runs for the first time since he backed-up from the Cox Plate second to finish third to Almandin in the Group 1 Melbourne Cup (3200m).

Winx and Hartnell are also both set for an elite level showdown during Sydney’s ‘The Championships’ when they round out their autumn campaigns on April 8 in the lucrative $4 million Group 1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m).

Futures 2017 Queen Elizabeth Stakes odds at Ladbrokes.com.au already have Winx under $2 for the win at $1.80 with Hartnell the next best in betting at $11.

Punters can also enjoy a bet on Winx in futures The Everest betting for the new $10 million Restricted race at Royal Randwick running for the first time on October 14.

Although Winx is far from a confirmed starter in the inaugural The Everest field, a spot in which costs connections $600,000, she is listed at $9 in the markets topped by exciting three-year-old Astern ($6).
