Griante Scratched From 2016 The Goodwood: Odds Update

In a blow for Mornington horseman David Brideoake his hope for Saturday’s The Goodwood 2016 in Adelaide Griante has been scratched from the sprint feature after pulling up sore.

The five-year-old daughter of Good Journey was one of 20 final acceptors for this year’s $500,000 Group 1 Darley Goodwood (1200m) at Morphettville Racecourse.

The line-up is now down to 19 starters with Brideoake and connections forced to withdraw Griante from the mix after she wasn’t fully fit after her Tuesday morning workout.

Winner of the Group 1 The Galaxy (1100m) at Rosehill in March, she was last seen running a close fourth beaten only 1.4 lengths by the winner Precious Gem in the Group 1 Robert Sangster Stakes (1200m) at Morphettville a fortnight ago.

Craig Williams was booked to continue his association in The Goodwood aboard the $1 million earner who had also drawn ideally in gate three.

All but Robbie Griffiths’ recent Newmarket Handicap winner at Flemington The Quarterback (1) and runner-up in the same race Black Heart Bart (2) now move in one closer to the rails in The Goodwood barriers after the early withdrawal from the set weights plus penalties feature.

After a last start second in the Group 1 All Aged Stakes (1400m) at weight-for-age in Sydney on April 9, the Darren Weir-trained Black Heart Bart continues to sit top of The Goodwood odds at Ladbrokes.com.au.

He pays $3.90 for the win with Brad Rawiller booked to ride the five-year-old son of Blackfriars.

There are just two other single-figure hopes in the latest The Goodwood betting markets with the Michael Kent-trained Sebring stallion Supido ($6) shooting for his seventh win at career start number nine and Under The Louvre ($8) prepared by another Melbourne horseman in Robert Smerdon.

Four-year-old Supido comes into barrier eight with James Winks to ride, Black Caviar the last The Goodwood winner to salute from that draw when she beat home a small field in 2012.

This is a notable rise in class for the current second-favourite on Saturday who is in flying form and backs up from a 1000m Flemington win on May 7, but who hasn’t raced in Group company as yet.

Under The Louvre meanwhile is now set to start from barrier 10 second-up with Dwayne Dunn replacing Mark Zahra in the saddle of the Excellent Art stallion.

The five-year-old hasn’t won a race since March of 2015 but ran third in last year’s The Goodwood when narrowly defeated by the winner Flamberge, and was also third to Stratum Star in last September’s Group 1 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes (1400m) in Melbourne.

First-up he was third past the post in a blanket finish, defeated only a quarter-length by Sheidel at Caulfield in the Listed Bel Esprit Stakes (1100m) carrying 60kg.

Under The Louvre drops to 55.5kg under the conditions of Saturday’s race, while the Bel Esprit winner Sheidel is also in the mix drawn one his outside in the rematch with 53.5kg.

One of five in the field for David Hayes & Tom Dabernig, Holy Roman Emperor mare Sheidel backed-up from her Listed win in Melbourne to finish a devastatingly close second in the Robert Sangster Stakes.

She is at $17 to win The Goodwood.

Other notable hopes in the top half of the market include the rails-drawn The Quarterback ($11) and smart Tasmanian galloper Admiral ($11).
