Promising filly Ghisoni went straight to front to lead all of the way to win the Group 2 $175,000 Coolmore Surround Stakes (1400m) at Randwick today.

Ghisoni was having her first run back from a spell and stepping up sharping in class but didn’t give her backers any concerns with James McDonald dictating the race from the front.

Gishoni, the $2.25 favourite was let go at the top of the rise and scored a comfortable one and a quarter lengths win over Single Gaze ($19) with Stay With Me ($4.40) making up some ground down the middle of the track to fill third spot.

Winning trainer John O’Shea is in two minds whether to keep Ghisoni racing against her own age in the Group 2 $175,000 Phar Lap Stakes (1500m) at Rosehill on March 2 or take on the older mares in the Group 1 $600,000 Coolmore Classic (1500m) on the same day.

“She is a special filly,” O’Shea said.

“She did a good job today. She had a little setback. It was a good job to get it done.”

“She has had a lovely run first and we have a few decisions to make when we get home.”

“There are a couple of options for her. We could go to the Phar Lap. She has only got 50kg in the Coolmore.”

“Whether we want to run a horse at her fourth start in a Coolmore, it might be the only time she carries 50kg. So we will have a think about it as team.”
