Toby Edmonds’ Phelan Ready Stakes winner Sundance has suffered an early blow ahead of his Group 3 debut in Saturday’s BJ McLachlan Stakes 2015 coming up with a wide alley for the Gold Coast feature.
Due to run as Gold Coast Race 4 at 1:39pm (QLD time) on Boxing Day, this year’s $150,000 Group 3 B.J. McLachlan Stakes (1200m) attracted a field of 13 two-year-olds.
Many are heading towards a run back at the track on January 2 in the $2.5 million Magic Millions 2YO Classic (1200m) including Edmonds’ promising I Am Invincible colt Sundance.
A $17 chance in futures Magic Millions Classic betting at Ladbrokes.com.au, Sundance ran second to Emtevee Queen over 1050m at Doomben on debut in November before returning to the track and distance on December 12 for the Listed Phelan Ready Stakes.
He enjoyed a gun run from barrier one and flew home for an impressive four and three quarter length win he’s out to repeat at the Gold Coast this weekend.
While jockey Jeff Lloyd retains the ride on the smart black-type winner, Sundance has work to do from a wide barrier 11 of 13 draw.
Also drawn wide are the likes of the Liam Birchley-trained Doomben winner Punishing (12) who ran eight in the Phelan Ready Stakes from the same gate and Bryan Guy’s last start Ipswich winner Game Of Dreams (13).
Likely favourite in BJ McLachlan Stakes betting thanks to a gun gate four draw this weekend is the Tony Gollan-trained undefeated filly Zelady’s Night Out.
The flying daughter of Myboycharlie is the $7 second pick for the 2016 Magic Millions Classic behind Capitalist ($1.90) after winning her opening two starts at Doomben.
A fortnight ago she saluted as the odds-on favourite in the Listed Calaway Gal Stakes (1050m) from barrier three to win by over two lengths, and now takes on the boys over more distance with Jim Byrne in the saddle again.
The rails run on Saturday belongs to one of Zelady’s Night Out’s main dangers, the Peter & Paul Snowden-trained Detective who is looking to join his top stablemate Capitalist in the MM Classic next month.
He debuted at Randwick on October 3 when runner-up to Capitalist in the Listed Breeders Plate (1000m) and gets every chance to further frank the form coming out of that spring run in his first Queensland run.
Along win Sundance and Zelady’s Night Out there are three other last start winners in Saturday’s line-up including the Kelso Wood-trained Nikitas drawn well in gate three with Michael Cahill booked for the ride.
Cahill got the job done on the Eagle Farm-based Snitzel colt on December 5 at Doomben from barrier 13 of 13 when the up-and-comer won on debut by nearly five lengths.
He will be improving off of that this weekend going up in class, but drawn far better as he heads towards the MM Classic currently paying $10 for the win.
Peter Robl’s Sydney-trained Snitzel filly Sugarparma also won her debut when taking out a 900m race at the Gold Coast on December 12, giving her winning form at the track.
