Tristram’s Sun Primed for Competitive Performance

Tristram’s Sun has been unable to return to the winner’s circle through five starts this time in, however trainer Robbie Laing is confident the six-year-old is more than a chance of reversing the trend in Saturday’s Spicer Thoroughbreds Handicap (2000m) at Caulfield.

Tristram’s Sun was a strong and consistent performer for Laing through the 2014 Australian racing calendar; posting six wins including four through the Victorian winter and capped by the Kyneton Cup (2000m) on November 5th.

Having been thrilled with the work produced by the six-year-old this time in, Laing believes Tristram’s Sun has been particularly luckless through his current campaign and is confident the conditions of Saturday’s Caulfield race should play directly into his strengths.

“He’s not a very big horse,” Laing told Racing Ahead.

“He won six races last year. Started off winning his maiden then four in town at Sandown through the winter months and then capped it off with the Kyneton Cup.

“That was a 90 plus racing and it made it hard for him, but with the claim and a bit of give in the ground (he should do well).

“He hit the line OK the other day and was inconvenienced early in the race at Moonee Valley ended up second last.

“If he can balance up around mid-field he should be in the top three tomorrow.”

Tristram’s Sun has posted six wins and a further nine minors through his 31 career starts so far, and while undoubtedly securing his best result to date in the Kyneton Cup on November 5th, was unable to keep the form streak alive when seventh in the Group 3 Eclipse Stakes (1800m) ten days later.

Finishing seventh in the 3am Community Raceday Handicap (1000m) first-up this time on April 11th, the Yamanin Vital gelding finished fourth in each of the Listed Wangoom Handicap (1200m) and Carlton Draught Handicap (1600m); placing fifth in both the Schweppes Handicap (1600m) and T Harrison Cup (1600m) most recently.

Ladbrokes.com.au is currently offering the best odds on all Caulfield races this weekend, including the Spicer Thoroughbreds Handicap, for which Tristram’s Sun can be taken at a quote of $31 for success.
