Due to run as Launceston Race 8 at 4:27pm (local) there are 13 runners making up the field for this year’s $225,000 Group 3 Betfair Launceston Cup (2400m).

Heading the final Launceston Cup acceptances and weights with a hefty 60.5kg is the John Luttrell-trained Geegees Blackflash.

Drawn well in barrier four for apprentice hoop Sigrid Carr, who cannot use her claim, the veteran Clangalang gelding comes off back-to-back Hobart wins this summer.

His most recent was with 59kg in the Group 3 Hobart Cup (2400m) on February 9, an effort he’ll be out to repeat but with a little more weight at Launceston where he’s won eight of his 24 starts.

He contested the Hobart Cup for the fifth consecutive year last start and enjoyed his second win in the mile and a half clash following a victory back in 2012.

As for the Launceston Cup his previous runs in the race are a third in 2014, victory in 2013, second back in 2012 and third in 2011 when he had his first start in the event.

Also coming into the Launceston Cup on Wednesday via the Hobart Cup are the likes of runner-up Genuine Lad for trainer Bill Ryan and third past the post Banca Mo.

Ladoni four-year-old Genuine Lad is half Geegees Blackflash’s age and is looking to break a frustrating streak of minor placings here.

He has run second or third in his past seven starts including behind Geegees Blackflash in both the Summer Cup and Hobart Cup.

Yet to win over the 2400m, he’s well weighted this week getting in on the 54kg minimum and interstate hoop Craig Williams is down for the ride from barrier nine.

Local Longford-based Ryan has also accepted for Iggimacool, the Savoire Vivre mare to jump from gate six with Genuine Lad’s regular rider Anthony Darmanin in the saddle also on 54kg.

Winner of the Listed Tasmanian Stakes (1600m) at Launceston back on New Year’s Eve, four-year-old Iggimacool was fifth in the Summer Cup and seventh in the Hobart Cup finishing a disappointing 12 and a half lengths off the winner last time out.

Banca Mo meanwhile will carry 56.5kg from barrier seven for jockey David Pires, the Scott Brunton-trained Tough Speed seven-year-old also in flying form.

Seeing the 2400m at Launceston for the first time, the veteran was runner-up to Iggimacool in the Tasmanian Stakes before his first-up third in the Hobart Cup he’ll be looking to improve on.

There are plenty of other talented stayers coming off good form in this year’s Launceston cup field too including the Gary White-trained Ollie’s Gold who ran fourth in the Hobart Cup but who has the outside barrier 13 to overcome, the Brendan McShane-trained last start winner over 2100m at the track Hugo and Keukenhof.

The Troy Blacker-trained Keukenhof has come up trumps with barrier three, Michelle Payne to ride the Helike five-year-old who is up over the distance for the first time.

He’s tipped to appreciate the trip however after two good 2100m runs at the track for two thirds including behind Hugo in the Sydeston Night Cup on February 18.
