Undefeated youngster Wicked Intent has opened odds-on favourite to defend his flawless record in the 2014 Phelan Ready Stakes 2014 in Brisbane on the weekend.

Barry Mitchell’s Wicked Style colt has won his opening two career starts, the latest an ultra-impressive four and a half-length effort over 1050m at Doomben on November 29.

There he secured top position in the futures markets for the $2 million Magic Millions 2YO Classic (1200m) at the Gold Coast on January 10, a spot he’ll be keeping if he can salute for the punters again on Saturday.

Wicked Intent returns to Doomben Racecourse for the second time, his debut win being on the Gold Coast in October, for the $100,000 Listed Morgans Seafood Phelan Ready Stakes (1050m) – the same track and distance he won over a fortnight ago.

Chris Munce rode him to victory that day and retains the ride for Saturday, the pair drawn well in barrier four, which could see a rain-affected track with summer storms hitting Queensland’s capital over the next two days.

In the current Phelan Ready Stakes odds at Ladbrokes.com.au Wicked Intent pays $1.60 and in 2015 Magic Millions 2YO Classic betting he is the $6 favourite in the all-in markets.

Three of his 10 rivals this weekend are also at single figures to score an upset with:

• #3 It’s Vegas Baby ($6) – Brad Herne-trained market mover in from $6.50, the only change since the odds opened at the start of the day. This Beneteau gelding debuted with a second behind Mishani De Caprio, a rival again this weekend, over 900m at the Gold Coast a month ago and should have taken improvement from the run. Won a barrier trial at Deagon since and ready for this Doomben test.
• #1 Mishandi Di Caprio ($8.50) – Les Ross’s Teofilo gelding ran second to Wicked Intent last time out and jumps from the inside alley for the rematch with James Orman back on after he missed the ride to Travis Wofgram when the galloper, a dual winner, finished a close second over 1200m here last weekend.
• #9 Red Magic ($9) – Tommy Berry is booked to ride this debutant Magic Albert colt from the Eagle Farm base of Danny Bougoure. Goes first-up without a trial but breeding is right and could surprise even from out in barrier nine.

Outside of these the next best in betting are then the Tony Gollan-trained son of Hinchinbrook Shipwrecked ($13) and Wicked Investment ($19) coming off back-to-back thirds at the track and distance for his opening campaign.
