2014 Darley Classic won by new world class sprinter Terravista

Sydney star Terravista stamped himself as world class sprinter by winning the 2014 Group 1 $1m Darley Classic (1200m) at Flemington today.

The Joe Pride trained Terravista ($10) downed a first class field of Group 1 performers to claim his first Group 1 victory over another emerging star Chautauqua ($2.45 favourite) and last season’s horse of the year Lankan Rupee ($5).

Winning jockey Hugh Bowman made it his second Group 1 win for the four day Melbourne Cup Carnival after taking out the Group 1 $1m Crown Oaks (2500m) at Flemington on Thursday on the Ciaron Maher trained Set Square.

While Buffering and Lankan Rupee were setting the pace up front, Bowman was sitting in behind with plenty of cover on Terravista before weaving a passage at the 250m mark to pounce on the leaders to score a decisive win in the end.

The Team Hawkes trained Chautauqua made a late run for Dwayne Dun but Terravista was too strong on the line with Lankan Rupee and Chad Schofield holding for third.

Pride has always held a huge opinion of Terravista and now that he has broken through for his first Group 1 win, he will set the five year old for the rich sprint races during the Sydney Autumn Carnival and hasn’t ruled out a trip to Royal Ascot in England.

“There is every chance (of Royal Ascot). There is not a lot of prizemoney around, he is a gelding you know. You have to consider prizemoney with a horse like this. He did a good job picking up a decent cheque today and the Sydney Autumn is his next assignment.”

Pride considers Terravista to be a world class galloper and today he went a lot way to proving it.

“He is an amazing horse and he is only at the start of his peak. He is going to go for the next few seasons,” Pride aid.

Irish sprinter Slade Power ($10) blew his chances at the start when he was slow to leave the barriers but after making up some ground mid race faded at the end to wind up in eleventh spot while Buffering ($15) fought on well to fill fourth position.

Terravista won by a neck from Chautauqua with three quarter of a length to Lankan Rupee and ran the 1200m up the Flemington straight tin 1.8.79s, the final 600m in 33.71s.
