Britain’s Sans Frontieres Steps Closer to 2010 Melbourne Cup Run

British galloper Sans Frontieres took another big step towards the 2010 Melbourne Cup with a win in the Group 3 Geoffrey Freer Stakes (2671m) at Newbury over the weekend.

The Jeremy Noseda-trained Sans Frontieres is one of the top international hopefuls nominated for the 150th Melbourne Cup on Tuesday November 2 at Flemington.

With so many classy stayers vying for a spot in the 24-horse Melbourne Cup final field this year, Sans Frontieres’ Freer Stakes win went a long way in securing the five-year-old a trip down under for the 2010 Melbourne Cup Carnival.

On Saturday, the Sir Robert Ogden-owned Sans Frontieres was able to hold off a late challenge by Laaheb to win by two and a quarter lengths.

The classy stayer also beat fellow Melbourne Cup entries Golden Sword and Pompeyano who finished fourth and fifth respectively in the Freer Stakes.

A son of boom Irish sire Galileo, Sans Frontieres has won three of his eight career starts to date including his recent victory in the Group 2 Princess of Wales’s Stakes (2414m).

Noseda has next month’s Group 1 Irish St. Leger (2816m) set as the final preparatory run for Sans Frontieres before heading to Australia for a the $6 million Melbourne Cup.

“It will be the Irish St Leger next and hopefully after that, we can have a tilt at the Melbourne Cup,” said Noseda.

Sans Frontieres is currently a $31 chance to win the 2010 Melbourne Cup through leading online bookmaker [sportsbet].

Topping the markets are the Bart Cummings-trained Dariana and last year’s Melbourne Cup winner Shocking, equal favourites at $13 through [sportsbet].

The best Melbourne Cup odds won’t be found at the TAB this year.
