Can a Roughie Win the 2010 Golden Slipper?

With all the attention currently on the hot pre-race favourites for Saturday’s $3.5million Group 1 Golden Slipper (1200m) at Rosehill, a few of the talented but lesser known roughies are making their preparations for an upset win in the richest two-year-olds race in the world.

The bookmakers and punters have got behind five clear selections for the 2010 Golden Slipper – Military Rose, Crystal Lily, Brightexpectations, Beneteau and Solar Charged.

But with punters and racing enthusiasts seeking a more lucrative pick for the Golden Slipper this year, attention is turning to some of the long-priced outsiders who have claims in the feature on Saturday.

Currently at $13 for a win with [iasbet], Chance Bye represents good value in the 2010 Golden Slipper.

Although Military Rose, a winner of all of her five starts to date, is the dominant favourite for the Golden Slipper this year, Chance Bye is another unbeaten filly in the field who has a strong chance of success and has the added advantage of drawing barrier three opposed to Military Rose’s eight.

Looking further down the betting markets Hinchinbrook, drawn well in barrier five, also looks excellent value at $17.

Winner of the Skyline Stakes two starts back, Hinchinbrook ran a gallant third to Brightexpectations last start in the Pago Pago Stakes from the same barrier and will be out to improve on that performance this Saturday. And, with a lucrative $2million first prize on offer this time the determination and energy will be at top level for Hinchinbrook to turn the tables!

A wet track on Saturday at Rosehill could also see one of the longer-priced runners move up and finish in the top three, if not win the race outright.

The Kris Lees-trained Elimbari is installed as a $67 chance after drawing wide with barrier 11 and being yet to win a black type race.

But Elimbari is a promising Fastnet Rock filly who ran a brilliant second to fellow Golden Slipper contender Solar Charged in the Kindergarten Stakes two starts back on a slow track.

Elimbari proved she can handle the wet conditions, but has been basically forgotten by the punters after running fifth to Golden Slipper favourite Military Rose last start in the Reisling Stakes on March 20.

On Saturday, however, Lees will run Elimbari without the blinkers that he is positive affected her performance in the Reisling.

Due to be ridden by Glyn Schofield, Elimbari’s wide barrier 11 draw actually looks to be beneficial for the roughie as she can avoid being caught up in the frantic start by the speedy beginners Crystal Lily, Chance Bye, Brightexpectaions and Military Rose in barriers one, three, four and eight respectively, and give her the room she needs to make her move.
