Talented Tasmanian Derby 2013 Field Announced

A talented line-up of 10 three-year-olds representing both local and interstate trainers has been accepted for the 2013 Tasmanian Derby running at Hobart Racecourse this Sunday, February 3.

Due to run as Race 7 on a card also boasting the Group 3 Bow Mistress Trophy (1200m) for the fillies and mares, this year’s $100,000 Listed Schweppes Tasmanian Derby (2200m) is shaping up as a cracker showdown.

One of the headline interstate raiders in the mix is the Peter Moody-trained Strive To Excel who has come up trumps drawing the inside alley, Daniel Stackhouse engaged for the ride.

The Redoute’s Choice colt was last seen winning over the mile and a half (2400m) at Mornington on January 11 with Stackhouse in the saddle, Strive To Excel sure to appreciate the drop back in distance here.

There are two other last-start winners along with Strive To Excel in this year’s Tasmanian Derby field with the Darren Weir-trained Gingerboy out wide in gate 10 and Mark Young’s Endzone also drawn awkwardly with barrier nine.

Ballarat galloper Gingerboy took out a 2018m 3YO maiden plate at Stawell on January 18, Sunday to be the Elvstroem gelding’s first look at the 2200m while Haradasun gelding Endzone won over 2000m at Ararat last time out.

Other notable hopefuls then include Darren Kenny’s progressive local Snippetson gelding Kenjorwood (barrier eight – Craig Newitt) who could back-up in the $225,000 Group 3 Hobart Cup (2400m) on February 10 if all goes well, and Anthony Freedman’s Flemington-based Testa Rossa gelding Hot Testa (barrier four – Steven Arnold).

Kenjorwood has finished runner-up in their past three runs and will finally look to break into the winners’ stall this weekend as the top-rated chance in this event their past two runs being competitive efforts in black type company.

They were defeated three quarters of a length by Mister John in the Listed Tasmanian Guineas (1600m) at Launceston at the start of last month before finishing runner-up with less than half a length separating them and the winner What Life Brings in the Listed Hobart Guineas (2100m) on January 20 – Newitt board for both runs.

Another perennial second placegetter is Hot Testa who also comes off three second place finishes the most recent of which was a devastatingly close effort behind Grand Daughter in a Benchmark 78 over 2040m at Moonee Valley last Friday night.
