Cranbourne trainer Michael Kent will attempt to make history this Melbourne Cup Carnival with his lightly-raced filly Summerbliss, the daughter of Danehill Dancer out to become the first horse ever to win the 2012 Crown Oaks at just her third career start.
Run on Thursday November 8 the $1 million Group 1 VRC Crown Oaks (2500m) is the season’s premier race for three-year-old fillies and this year Summerbliss will look to take the bikkies with just two previous runs to her name.
Winner on debut at Ballarat on October 3 over the mile with ace hoop Craig Williams in the saddle Summerbliss backed up on Caulfield Cup Day 17 days later and finished a brave second to Alzora in the Listed Ethereal Stakes (2000m).
She will next contest the Crown Oaks 2012 where she is tipped to perform well over the 2500m, a distance all the young fillies must make to be crowned the Crown Oaks winner.
So taken with her condition, Kent is likely to bypass the traditional Oaks lead-up with Summerbliss to miss the $250,000 Group 2 Wakeful Stakes (2000m) at Saturday week’s Victoria Derby Day meeting at Flemington.
“She’s a real staying filly and, while I might nominate her for the Wakeful, she’s more than likely to go into the Oaks at her next run,” Kent said.
“She’s continued to please.”
The latest Crown Oaks odds at bookmaker.com.au are led by Anthony Freedman’s Zabeel filly Zydeco ($3.30) who was last seen finishing a brave third to Commanding Jewel in the Group 1 Thousand Guineas (1600m).
Summerbliss then occupies the second line of Crown Oaks betting at a quote of $4.20 followed by Clarry Conners’ Thousand Guineas runner-up Dear Demi who rounds out the single-figure chances paying $5.
The 2012 Crown Oaks final field and barrier draw are due for release on Monday November 5, 2012, with Races.com.au to publish the full list of acceptances and gates.
