Hay List Mount for Caviar Clash Still Open

The BTC Cup ride aboard hulking galloper Hay List against the fastest horse in the world Black Caviar is yet to be decided by connections, but injured hoop Glyn Schofield has officially been ruled out.

Hay List

Hay List is one of the 16 first BTC Cup acceptors

Regular rider of John McNair’s dual Group 1 winning Statue Of Liberty gelding Hay List, Glyn Schofield suffered a fractured collarbone after falling from the Chris Waller-trained Sydney Cup favourite Hawk Island at Royal Randwick on April 30.

The serious fall subsequently saw Schofield miss the victorious ride aboard Hay List in the next race, Glen Boss taking the mount on the five-year-old as Hay List recorded an all-too-easy three and a half length win in the Group 1 All Aged Stakes.

Hoping to recover in time to saddle Hay List in the $400,000 Group 1 BTC Cup (1200m) at Doomben on May 12 where the horse will come face-to-face with his famous nemesis Black Caviar, Schofield has since received the bad news he will not be fit to reunite with his ace mount.

“I’m due to see Dr Duckworth, who is unbelievable, on Monday week and if all is good I’ll start riding trackwork,” Schofield said on Wednesday.

“I’ll look to ride at the Rosehill meeting on the 21st (of May).”

Although unable to ride Hay List for his Brisbane debut, Schofield is making a faster than expected recovery.

“I had a sling on for the first couple of days and then took it off,” Schofield said.

“At the moment I’m not doing anything, just resting up, but it feels table with the plate in there.”

Hay List will have a 1000m hitout on the course proper at Randwick on Friday morning trialling against the likes of Vinery Stud Stakes runner-up Fibrillation, the Gai Waterhouse-trained Not A Single Doubt colt Squamosa yet to resume since their narrow second to Toorak Toff in the 2010 Golden Rose and fellow BTC Cup first acceptor Shellscrape.

Corey Brown will partner Hay List for the barrier trail on Friday but is not in the running for the BTC Cup ride.

Discussions between McNair and Hay List’s owners have triple Melbourne Cup winning jockey Glen Boss, who is currently on a three-month riding contract in Singapore and would have to return to Australia, up against Chris Munce for the mount despite McNair having earlier booked Shane Scriven.

Munce has also deputised for Schofield on Hay list in the past when aboard for the horse’s blistering five length win in the Group 3 W.J. Healy Stakes (1200m) at Eagle Farm last June.

“I’m probably leaning slightly to Glen Boss but there is no rush to make a decision,” McNair said.
