2026 Melbourne Cup Barrier Draw Key Facts
2026 Melbourne Cup Favourite’s Barrier
- No. 20 Point Of Law is the 2026 Melbourne Cup favourite drawn barrier 9 which last produced a winner with Efficient in 2007.
Race favourite, the highly rated Ciaron Maher-trained Ladbrokes Geelong Cup winner Point Of Law, will jump from barrier 9 with Ethan Brown sticking aboard the progressive Frankel four-year-old who was ultra-impressive in his Australian race debut.
Success for the punters on Tuesday will see Point Of Law become the most lightly raced Melbourne Cup winner in modern history as he has just his sixth start, and he’s at a current quote of $7 through Ladbrokes.

Last Year’s Melbourne Cup Winning Barrier
- Barrier 8 (Half Yours) – drawn in 2026 by Enfjaar coming off a great Caulfield Cup third placing only a length beaten.
The last time back-to-back Melbourne Cup winners jumped from the same barrier was in 2012 and 2013 with Green Moon and Fiorente both saluting from gate five, and the updated Melbourne Cup odds at Ladbrokes have Enfjaar at $19.
Most Successful Melbourne Cup Barriers:
- Barrier 11 – 9 wins (last win Americain in 2010) – Drawn in 2026 by No. 15 Zahrann
- Barrier 5 – 9 wins (last win Knight’s Choice in 2024) – Drawn in 2026 by No. 14 Soul Of Spain
- Barrier 10 – 6 wins (last win Protectionist in 2014) – Drawn in 2026 by No. 23 Zakouma
- Barrier 14 – 6 wins (last win Makybe Diva in 2005) – Drawn in 2026 by No. 11 Juja Kibo
- Barrier 8 – 6 wins (last win Half Yours in 2025) – Drawn in 2026 by No. 6 Enfjaar
Barriers eleven and five are the equal most successful in Melbourne Cup history producing nine winners each since 1924 with Americain (barrier 11 in 2010) and Knight’s Choice (barrier 5 in 2024) the latest.
This year barrier 11 belongs to the Ciaron Maher-trained Zahrann, the Group 3 Naturalism Stakes winner coming off a sixth in the Caulfield Cup and firming from $34 into $26 for Tuesday’s race after getting the ideal gate.
This year barrier 5 belongs to the Chris Waller-trained Soul Of Spain, with the current $51 outsider getting every chance from the good draw.
The six of the past eight Melbourne Cup winners all jumped from a double-digit barrier.
Prior to Half Yours (barrier 8 in 2025) and Knight’s Choice (barrier 5 in 2024), Rekindling (barrier 4 in 2017) was the last Melbourne Cup winner to jump from a single-digit gate.
Outside 2026 Melbourne Cup Barrier
- Barrier 24 drawn in 2026 by No. 18 James J Braddock
The last Melbourne Cup winner to jump from the outside barrier was Brew from gate 22 in 2000.
Quirky Melbourne Cup Barrier in 2026
- No. 13 Onesmoothoperator in barrier 13
This year only one Melbourne Cup horse drew the same barrier as their saddlecloth with the now Tim Fitzsimmons-trained nine-year-old having his second start in the race but first as a locally trained stayer. He ran 16th last year when prepared by Brian Ellison.
Widest Melbourne Cup Winning Barrier Since 2000
- Barrier 22 is the widest gate to produce a Melbourne Cup winner in the past 25 years with Brew in 2000 – Drawn in 2026 by No. 5 Vauban

Melbourne Cup 2026 Barrier Draw FAQs
When is the Melbourne Cup 2026 barrier draw?
The official Melbourne Cup 2026 barrier draw has been completed, with all 24 runners allocated their starting gates for the 166th running of the Lexus Melbourne Cup at Flemington on Tuesday, November 3, 2026.
Which barrier did the 2026 Melbourne Cup favourite draw?
Current Melbourne Cup favourite Point Of Law drew barrier 9, a gate that last produced a Melbourne Cup winner when Efficient won in 2007. The progressive Ciaron Maher-trained Geelong Cup winner is one of the best-supported runners in betting and appears to have received an ideal draw.
What barrier did last year’s winning Melbourne Cup barrier draw in 2026?
The 2025 Melbourne Cup winner Half Yours jumped from barrier 8, and that same gate has been allocated to Enfjaar in the 2026 race. Barrier 8 now has six Melbourne Cup winners to its name and is looking to go back-to-back.
What are the most successful Melbourne Cup barriers in history?
The most successful barriers in Melbourne Cup history are:
- Barrier 5 – 9 winners (last: Knight’s Choice, 2024) – Drawn by Soul Of Spain
- Barrier 11 – 8 winners since barrier systems were introduced (last: Americain, 2010) – Drawn by Zahrann
- Barrier 8 – 6 winners (last: Half Yours, 2025) – Drawn by Enfjaar
- Barrier 14 – 6 winners (last: Makybe Diva, 2005) – Drawn by Juja Kibo
- Barrier 19 – 6 winners (last: Cross Counter, 2018) – Drawn by Goodie Two Shoes
Which horse drew the coveted barrier 11 in the 2026 Melbourne Cup?
The historically successful barrier 11 belongs to Zahrann, the Ciaron Maher-trained Naturalism Stakes winner who firmed in betting following the draw.
Which horse drew barrier 5 in the 2026 Melbourne Cup?
Soul Of Spain drew barrier 5, a gate that produced the 2024 Melbourne Cup winner Knight’s Choice and sits equal as the most successful barrier in race history.
Which horse drew the outside barrier in the 2026 Melbourne Cup?
James J Braddock will jump from the widest gate, barrier 24. The last Melbourne Cup winner to score from the outside barrier was Brew, who famously won from gate 22 in 2000.
Has a horse ever won the Melbourne Cup from barrier 24?
Yes. Barrier 24 has produced three Melbourne Cup winners, with Gala Supreme (1973) the most recent winner to score from that gate.
Which Melbourne Cup runner drew the same barrier as its saddlecloth number?
Only one horse achieved the quirky double in 2026, with Onesmoothoperator (No. 13) drawing barrier 13.
What is the widest barrier to produce a Melbourne Cup winner in the past 25 years?
The widest winning barrier in the past quarter-century is barrier 23, courtesy of Brew’s famous 2000 victory. In 2026, barrier 23 has been allocated to Wine Dark Sea.
Do Melbourne Cup winners usually come from inside or outside barriers?
Recent history suggests wider draws are not a disadvantage. Six of the past eight Melbourne Cup winners jumped from double-digit barriers, although the last two winners came from single-digit gates with Knight’s Choice (barrier 5) in 2024 and Half Yours (barrier 8) in 2025.
Which 2026 Melbourne Cup runners received the best barriers statistically?

Past champion Knight’s Choice has drawn barrier 2 for his shot at a second Melbourne Cup victory and will again be ridden by Robbie Dolan.
