2018 Black Caviar Lightning Strikes for Supido

Supido is out to atone for his dead last from 2017 with a first-up run in the Black Caviar Lightning 2018 this February.

Michael Kent’s Group 1 placed six-year-old put in an impressive 800m Cranbourne hit-out win on Monday morning in the lead-up to his Melbourne Autumn Racing Carnival return.

Kent was thrilled with the trial victory and believes Supido is in career best form fitness-wise.

“Punters will see a different horse this preparation,” the Cranbourne-based horseman told Racing Victoria.

“He has always had a few niggling issues, things that have probably held him back from showing his absolute best but I’m so happy this time in.”

Supido was settled at the tail end of Monday’s jump-out and put in a blistering late effort to easily account for Udyta Clarke’s last start Group 2 Flemington winner Rich Charm.

This time last year the son of Sebring finished ninth behind Terravista when resuming in the Group 1 $750,000 Black Caviar Lightning (1000m), which followed his third to Black Heart Bart the previous May in Adelaide’s Group 1 The Goodwood (1200m).

Kent will give Supido the chance to atone 12 months on, again scheduling the Black Caviar Lightning on February 17 as the horse’s campaign kick-off.

Supido backed-up from his first-up flop last autumn to finish third to English in Sydney’s Group 2 Challenge Stakes (1000m) at Royal Randwick on a Heavy (10) track before heading to the paddock.

Lightly-raced for his age with seven wins from 14 starts, the entire returned last winter and won the Group 3 Sir John Monash Stakes (1100m) as the odds-on favourite at Caulfield.

He was last seen finishing fifth of six runners behind Russian Revolution in early September’s Group 2 McEwen Stakes (1000m) at The Valley.

Following the likely Black Caviar Lightning Stakes return, Supido could return to Flemington on Super Saturday for a shot at the Group 1 $1.25 million Lexus Newmarket Handicap (1200m) on March 10.

All-in Black Caviar Lightning betting at Ladbrokes.com.au lists Supido as a $17 shot.

The futures Black Caviar Lightning odds are firmly led by the Peter & Paul Snowden-trained The Everest winner Redzel ($2.70) whose last start produced a Group 1 Darley Classic (1200m) win down the Flemington straight during the Melbourne Cup Carnival.

Kent also has not ruled out a potential overseas’ bid for Supido who could head to Dubai on March 31 for the Group 1 Al Quoz Sprint (1200m), a race won by Australian sprinters Buffering (2016) and Ortensia (2012) in years gone by.
