2017 Epsom Handicap Tips & Odds Update

A class field of milers take to the Randwick track on Saturday for the Epsom Handicap 2017, betting tips and updated odds for the spring classic found below.

Due to run as Randwick Race 7 at 4:00pm (AEST) as part of the bumper nine-race card, this season’s Group 1 $1 million Epsom Handicap (1600m) betting markets are all about Happy Clapper.

He comes off a lead-up second in the Group 1 George Main Stakes (1600m) after a gutsy up-front ride before being run down by Winx, the exact form last year’s Epsom Handicap winner Hauraki brought into the race.

The Patrick Webster-trained seven-year-old is out to join Super Impose (1991) as the only other Epsom Handicap winner of that age group and sits top of the odds at Ladbrokes.com.au paying $2.60, firming in from $3 after the Friday morning scratching of Egg Tart.

It has been an open Epsom Handicap betting affair outside Happy Clapper with a further three single-figure fancies all prepared by Chris Waller who has trained three of the past four champions in the race.

Earlier in the week we published our comprehensive 2017 Epsom Handicap Form Guide & Betting Preview, our inside tips below based on the facts and stats uncovered.

Our 2017 Epsom Handicap Trifecta Tip is #11 Comin’ Through from #1 Happy Clapper and #9 Tom Melbourne

1st

#11 Comin’ Through ($7)

Happy to stick with Waller’s outstanding recent record in the Epsom Handicap results and tip this in-form Fastnet Rock four-year-old. He has won back-to-back Randwick races leading-up to this Group 1 test. Last start won the Group 3 Bill Ritchie Handicap (1400m) carrying 53kg. Is a genuine lightweight chance this weekend carrying only 51kg and has the ‘Magic Man’ Joao Moreira aboard, who rode He’s Your Man (2014) to victory for the stable. Four-year-olds have dominated this race including six wins in the past eight years. Comes into barrier 10, which has also proved the best gate in the past four years producing three Epsom winners. Chases the double last completed by the also Waller-trained Boban (2013) and boasts the second best Win (44%) and Place (78%) of the field.

2nd

#1 Happy Clapper ($2.60)

Deserving favourite who gives the weight away to the field, but rightfully so. Still a very winnable race for the evergreen veteran who has been impressive this campaign again. Won the Tramway with 57kg in good style over Tom Melbourne before giving Winx something to chase in the George Main. His record at the Randwick mile is outstanding, including the two Doncaster Mile seconds and wasn’t far beaten when fourth in this race 12 months ago. He’ll get things his way from the ideal barrier (4) and has experience on his side. Could just come out and win.

3rd

#9 Tom Melbourne ($6)

Perennial placegetter from the Waller contingent comes off three straight second place finishes this campaign. Drops right back from the 57kg he carried to the narrow finish behind Comin’ Through last start to 52kg and that’s a massive advantage. There’s likely to be a change of tactics to try and get him first past the post and if it pays off he could give jockey Glen Boss a fourth Epsom victory.
