Egg Tart Peaking for 2017 Queensland Oaks at Doomben

There may have been a change of location and distance but the Chris Waller-trained Egg Tart is still considered the filly to beat when she hits peak form in the Queensland Oaks 2017 at Doomben on Saturday.

The poor track conditions at Eagle Farm Racecourse has forced the move of the Queensland Oaks Day and Stradbroke Handicap Day meetings to Doomben starting this weekend.

With Doomben having a different course circumference to that of the roomier Eagle Farm track, the location change has also seen a number of races change distance including Saturday’s $500,000 Group 1 Queensland Oaks (2400m down to 2200m).

All-in Queensland Oaks betting at Ladbrokes.com.au however remains led by the Waller-trained Egg Tart who chases her sixth consecutive turf triumph.

The flying daughter of Sebring hasn’t put a foot wrong all preparation including her last start victory in the Group 1 Schweppes Oaks (2010m) in Adelaide.

While a number of her rivals have run since including in the Group 2 The Roses (2000m) at Doomben on May 20, Waller has opted to keep his Group 1 winner fresh.

Egg Tart then goes into the Queensland Oaks field without a run in four weeks, but she has been brought on fitness-wise with a Rosehill trial over 1030m on May 26.

Waller remains confident he’s got the filly as good as he can though as she attempts the interstate Oaks double.

Jockey Kerrin McEvoy retains the ride on Saturday’s Queensland Oaks favourite and also put the filly through her paces in the Sydney hit-out last Friday over 1030m.

McEvoy chases his second Queensland Oaks winning ride after success aboard the Peter Snowden-trained favourite Purple back in 2009.

Two years ago Waller won the Queensland Oaks with his now Hall of Fame mare Winx (2015) who came off a win in the Group 3 Sunshine Coast Guineas that year.

Prior to Winx the five previous Queensland Oaks winners were The Roses graduates, but Kiwi raider Provocative won the event last winter first-up down under off a Group 2 run across the Tasman that February.

This season’s The Roses winner was the Darren Weir-trained Kenedna who was also second past the most narrowly beaten home in the Schweppes Oaks at Morphettville by Egg Tart.

Kenedna is the $4.80 third favourite in the pre-field Queensland Oaks odds with only Egg Tart and Stuart Webb’s Schweppes Oaks third placegetter Ana Royale ($4.40) shorter than her in the markets.

Ana Royale had her final lead-up into the Queensland feature on May 20 at Morphettville with a three length win in the Group 3 SA Fillies Classic (2500m).

She may shape-up as being better suited to the original 2400m Queensland Oaks distance, but her Caulfield-based trainer Webb remains confident.

Waller’s other best Queensland Oaks hopes in 2017 are The Roses runner-up Oklahoma Girl ($8) and Dawn Wall ($8.50) who won the Listed Gold Coast Bracelet (1800m) on May 6.

Check out the full futures Queensland Oaks odds on offer now at Ladbrokes.com.au before prices firm with the release on final acceptances and barriers on Wednesday morning.
