The 163rd edition of the world’s richest handicap will light up headquarters in Victoria at 3:00pm (AEDT) today and below we take a look at the Melbourne Cup 2023 betting market movers and shakers.
Australian-born, Hong Kong-based Purton is in town for the carnival and will ride one of the four international raiders in this year’s Melbourne Cup field.
The fellow Mullins-trained Vauban is a long-time favourite at a current quote of $4.40 to salute from barrier three with Ryan Moore aboard the galloper first-up down under.
Vauban is the easing favourite however out from $3.40 at final acceptance time.
Despite the drift, Vauban continues to have the highest percentage of hold with Ladbrokes.com.au, currently at 18.46 per cent including one bet for $20,000 @ $4.20.
Stablemate Absurde, who won his way into the two-mile classic via an impressive Ebor Handicap win with more weight, has been steadily backed for the upset.
He could be found as long as $23 earlier but has had his Melbourne Cup odds slashed to $10 at time of publish through Ladbrokes.com.au.
The largest bet taken on Absurde through Ladbrokes.com.au was for $15,384.62 @ $14.
Other runners to notably firm in the Melbourne Cup markets as the punters hunt for the value include Right You Are ($81 into $31) who is one from the five-strong Maher/Eustace contingent, his stablemate Ashrun ($41 into $26) to be ridden by three-time winning hoop Kerrin McEvoy, the Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott-trained Military Mission ($46 into $21), and his stablemate Serpentine ($61 into $35) who is the sole remaining hope for owner Lloyd Williams to secure his incredible eighth victory.
Punters meanwhile have seemed to shy away from back-to-back wins by Gold Trip who has eased out notably from $4.40 to $7.50 to successfully defend his title with the 58.5kg top-weight from gate two with James McDonald coming aboard.
Still he holds 11.28 per cent with Ladbrokes.com.au second only to Vauban.
