2023 Thousand Guineas Target for Prelude Winner Coeur Volante

Trainer Michael Moroney looks to have a pretty special filly on target for the 2023 Thousand Guineas next month following the impressive Prelude win by Coeur Volante on Caulfield Cup Day.

A rescheduled edition of the Group 1 $1.5 million Schweppes Thousand Guineas (1600m) will take place back at the Caulfield track on November 18 this spring with Coeur Volante looking the pick of the locals now.

The talented young daughter of Proisir took her record up to three wins from four career starts and enjoyed a second Group victory on the trot with a strong performance in the Group 2 $300,000 Thousand Guineas Prelude (1400m).

Last start she began her spring schedule looking towards a Thousand Guineas grand final when saluting at The Valley in the Group 3 Scarborough Stakes (1200m) from barrier three.

Jockey Blake Shinn continued associations and pulled out an absolute peach of a ride in the Thousand Guineas Prelude, the hoop getting across from a wide barrier to slot in after his filly absolutely pinged the gates.

Coeur Volante ($4.60) showed off her versatility and was excellent out over further.

She came three and then four deep as they approached the turn with the front runner Oz Empress looking to steal the show upping the pace.

The front runner was quickly put under pressure however with Coeur Volante sideling up on the outside to take over with 200m to go.

In the end she was simply too good, drawing clear thanks to a terrific ride by Shinn to put the writing on the wall for the upcoming Group 1 target with a comfortable Group 2 success.

On the line she had 1.25 lengths to spare over the Archie Alexander-trained outside Vivy Air ($26), with the trifecta completed by former New Zealander Zourion ($31).

“It was another very good ride, but she flew the gates,” a happy Moroney told Racing.com post-win.

“She did a good job getting across.

“I thought it was a great effort.

“She pulled the extra out.

“The decision now we’ve got to make is to whether to give her another run in 10 days’ time on Melbourne Cup Day or just go straight into it (the Thousand Guineas).”

Moroney won the Thousand Guineas back in 1999 with Shizu.

Irish Lights (2009) was the last filly to complete the Thousand Guineas Prelude – Thousand Guineas double.

Coeur Volante is now into $6 occupying the second line of all-in 2023 Thousand Guineas betting at Ladbrokes.com.au to be the next.
