2022 Melbourne Cup Betting Tips: Who to Back by the Facts

UPDATE: No. 18 Lunar Flare (12) has been scratched from the Melbourne Cup field

One of the country’s oldest races, the history on the ‘Race That Stops A Nation’ gives punters plenty of trends to consider when doing the Melbourne Cup 2022 tips for Tuesday.

The famous Flemington Race 7 jumps at 3:00pm (AEDT) on the first Tuesday of November each spring and there are currently 23 stayers in the mix for this year’s Group 1 $7.75 million Lexus Melbourne Cup (3200m).

In a typically open Melbourne Cup betting market at [ladborkes] there is just one horse under $10 for the win with James Ferguson’s British galloper Deauville Legend ($3.80) tipped to further frank the top international form at this year’s Flemington Carnival.

The only perceived threat looking at the Melbourne Cup odds is the early market mover Realm Of Flowers ($10) right down the weights with just 50kg.

They are the two Melbourne Cup tips the bookies are putting forward, but what does the Melbourne Cup historical facts and betting statistics on the two-mile classic uncover about what horses are a genuine winning chance?

Melbourne Cup Facts Say to Back….

Robert Hickmott-Trained Horses: Hickmott is the head trainer at Macedon Lodge and is the only winning trainer to have prepared more than one past Melbourne Cup winner in the race this year. Hickmott has won the race twice with Almandin (2016) and Green Moon (2012). He lost Point Nepean on Monday due to injury, but remains in the mix with Serpentine on the quick back-up off a Lexus Archer Stakes second on Derby Day.

  • Back: No. 13 Serpentine ($61)

Lloyd Williams-Owned Horses: Prolific businessman Lloyd Williams holds the ownership record with an incredible seven Melbourne Cup victories and counting. He returns with Serpentine (having lost the withdrawn Point Nepean) looking to add another ‘Loving Cup’ trophy to the cabinet.

  • Back: No. 13 Serpentine ($61)

Kerrin McEvoy-Ridden Horse: McEvoy has ridden three past Melbourne Cup winners with Cross Counter (2018), Almandin (2016) and Brew (2000). He is now after a record-equalling fourth in 2022 aboard the favourite Deauville Legend.

  • Back: No. 8 Deauville Legend ($3.80)

The Runner in Barrier 5: History shows barrier five has produced more Melbourne Cup winners than any other with eight previous champions jumping from the gate, most recently Fiorente (2013), since barriers were introduced. This year barrier five belongs to the early market mover, Sam & Anthony Freedman’s well-backed mare Realm Of Flowers.

  • Back: No. 24 Realm Of Flowers ($10)

The Horses Starting with T: Horses with a name starting with the Letter ‘T’ have won 16 times in Melbourne Cup history, more than any other. Most recently Twilight Payment (2020).

  • Back: No. Tralee Rose ($81)

The Stallions in the Race: Entires have dominated Melbourne Cup Results with entires (horses) aged 4+ saluting 71 times, most recently in 2017 with Rekindling.

  • Back: No. 1 Gold Trip ($17), No. 12 Hoo Ya Mal ($15), No. 23 Interpretation ($51)

Four-Year-Olds in the Field: 4YOs (46) hold the advantage over any other age group when it comes to number of Melbourne Cup winners. Note, northern hemisphere 3Yos race down under as 4YOs and are included here as 4YO winners.

  • Back: No. 8 Deauville Legend ($3.80), No. 12 Hoo Ya Mal ($15)

Horses Wearing Saddlecloth No. 4: A record 12 Melbourne Cup winners have donned the No. 4 saddlecloth numbers the latest being Verry Elleegant (2021) who was the first since At Talaq (1986) to do so.

  • Back: No. 4 Montefilia ($11)
