2021 Melbourne Cup Third Acceptances: 60 Stayers Remain

Third declarations for the 2021 Melbourne Cup have now closed leaving 60 potential stayers eyeing a run in the world’s richest handicap race at Flemington on Tuesday November 2.

The Peter Moody-trained Incentivise remains favourite in all-in markets at Ladbrokes.com.au on this year’s Group 1 $7.75 million Lexus Melbourne Cup (3200m) ahead of his run in this Saturday’s Caulfield Cup field.

The Queensland expat has saluted in the Makybe Diva – Turnbull Stakes double in Melbourne this spring, so far living up to the hype after his 12-length romp home in Brisbane’s Group 3 Tattersall’s Cup (2400m) in the winter.

He is currently allocated 55.5kg in the Melbourne Cup weights and runs in the opening leg of the coveted Spring Cups double as the hot favourite for the Group 1 $5 million Caulfield Cup (2400m) third-up this weekend.

Success this weekend will see him on track to become just the 12th horse in history and the first since the mighty mare Ethereal (2001) to claim the Caulfield Cup – Melbourne Cup double.

Melbourne Cup top weight following third acceptances is Joseph O’Brien’s reigning champion Twilight Payment (58kg) one of three remaining international entries for the ‘race that stops a nation’.

There are three remaining international Melbourne Cup entries following third declarations: Twilight Payment, Spanish Mission and Away He Goes

The Teofilo nine-year-old carried 55.5kg to victory in an all-European Melbourne Cup trifecta last year and was last seen carting 62kg to a brave second in the Group 1 Irish St Leger (2816m) at The Curragh this September.

The best fancied of the remaining international Melbourne Cup horses this season is the Andrew Balding-trained Spanish Mission.

The Noble Mission entire has winning form up to 3600m and has been excellent this season with a Group 2 Yorkshire Cup (2787m) victory, third in Ascot’s Group 1 Gold Cup (4014m) and last start second in the Group 2 Lonsdale Cup (3270m) at York carrying 58.5kg.

The other remaining European raider still entered for the Cup is the Ismail Mohammed-trained Away He Goes, recent placegetter in both the Group 1 Dubai Gold Cup (3rd) and Group 1 Goodwood Cup (2nd) over the two miles.

All three raiders are currently residing in the Werribee International Horse Centre, joined by the now Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott-trained Camelot four-year-old Sir Lucan who sits 40th on the Melbourne Cup order of entry.

The Waterhouse/Bott stable also paid the third acceptance fee for their proven two-miler Knights Order who won the Group 2 Brisbane Cup (3200m) back in June.

So far three horses have attracted a Melbourne Cup weight penalty with Group 3 The Bart Cummings winner Grand Promenade who is guaranteed a run in the 24-horse field, David Payne’s The Metropolitan winning mare in Sydney Montefilia and last weekend’s Group 2 Herbert Power Stakes champ Delphi for Anthony & Sam Freedman.

Grand Promenade is one of a 10 Melbourne Cup third acceptances for Ciaron Maher & David Eustace whose contingent also features the likes of: last year’s Cox Plate winner Sir Dragonet, triple Derby winner Explosive Jack and in-form English expat Floating Artist.

Other standout Melbourne Cup third acceptors include the: Freedman’s ballot-exempt Andrew Ramsden winning mare Realm Of Flowers, recent Turnbull Stakes runner-up Young Werther for 2019 Melbourne Cup winning trainer Danny O’Brien, Chris Waller’s Sydney Cup champ Selino and his nine-time Group 1 winning stablemate Verry Elleegant who was recently named Australian Racehorse of the Year.

The notable withdrawals at third acceptances stage that were inside the coveted Top 24 on the Melbourne Cup ballot were: Colette (trained by James Cummings), Hungry Heart (Chris Waller), Spirit Ridge (GB) (Mark Newnham) and Angel Of Truth (Team Hawkes).

There is one final race offering a golden ticket into Flemington’s flagship event: the Group 3 Lexus Hotham Handicap (2500m) running on Derby Day.

Fourth acceptances are open until 10:00am (AEDT) on Monday October 25 before the official final 2021 Melbourne Cup field is announced after 4:30pm (AEDT) following the VRC Derby Day action at Flemington on Saturday October 30.
