Star Godolphin sprinter Trekking dominates the 2020 Winterbottom Stakes field and betting for the latest Group 1 feature of the Perth Summer Racing Carnival on Saturday.
Perth Racing has confirmed a capacity field of 16 plus a single emergency for this season’s edition of the Group 1 $1 million Crown Perth Winterbottom Stakes (1200m) with the barrier draw to take place late Tuesday afternoon.
Heading the line-up and final field Winterbottom Stakes odds at Ladbrokes.com.au is the James Cummings-trained Trekking who capped off an excellent prep this time last year running fourth to Hey Doc in the same race.
Third in The Everest and runner-up in the Winners Stakes in 2019, the now six-year-old son of Street Cry will jump the punters’ pick again in the Winterbottom looking to atone for last year’s loss.
Subsequent winner of the Group 1 The Goodwood (1200m) in Adelaide this May, Trekking ran fourth in the $15 million The Everest in 2020 and was last seen finishing runner-up to the reigning Winterbottom champ Hey Doc in The Valley’s Group 1 Manikato Stakes (1200m) on October 23.
Kept fresh since, he has been specifically set for another run in the Winterbottom Stakes over in WA and will be ridden by the ‘Wizard of the West’, the absolutely airborne William Pike on the weekend.
The latest Winterbottom Stakes odds at Ladbrokes.com.au have him at $2.20 to salute, well clear of his rivals in the markets.
Two locals follow in betting at $9 each with Celebrity Queen and Stageman considered the “dangers”.
Prepared by Perth’s premier training duo of Grant & Alana Williams, four-year-old Redoute’s Choice mare Celebrity Queen has won six of her 10 starts including her narrow win in the Group 3 Colonel Reeves Stakes (1100m) in the wet on November 14.
She is up in grade here and will need to be good going up in weight, but boasts strong 1200m form (7:4-1-0) and has Chris Parnham aboard once again.
Stageman was a devastatingly close runner-up in the Colonel Reeves Stakes last time out, Adam Durrant’s Written Tycoon six-year-old looking to improve on his ninth in last year’s Winterbottom Stakes results.
Also under double-figures to keep the Winterbottom trophy at home is the Neville Parnham-trained Indian Pacific ($9.50).
A talented four-year-old son of Zoustar, the gelding took his record up to six from nine first-up in the Listed Crawford Stakes before his third still under a length beaten in the Colonel Reeves run on a Heavy (8) Ascot track a fortnight ago.
Other notable hopes in the mix include Dan Morton’s flying Street Boss four-year-old Elite Street ($11) looking to continue his winning streak, recent Prince Of Wales Stakes winner Valour Road ($15) and the Steve Wolfe-trained Red Can Man ($18) on the quick back-up off his fourth only two lengths beaten in last weekend’s Group 1 $1 million Railway Stakes (1600m).
Head to Ladbrokes.com.au for the latest Winterbottom Stakes 2020 betting odds with the barriers to be announced shortly.
