2020 Caulfield Guineas First Acceptances: 113 Three-Year-Olds Remain

First acceptances for the Caulfield Guineas 2020 closed on Tuesday with 113 three-year-olds still in the mix for the $2 million classic taking place on Saturday October 10.

Blue Diamond winner Tagaloa is one of the key 2020 Caulfield Guineas first acceptances. Ultimate Racing Photos.

The Group 1 $2 million Neds Caulfield Guineas (1600m) attracted 266 nominations, that number cut at first acceptance stage this week.

There were 112 Caulfield Guineas first acceptors in 2019, one less than this season where Ciaron Maher & David Eustace dominate numbers-wise with 14 entries still in the mix.

The standout Maher & Eustace entries are their last start Group 3 Ming Dynasty Quality winner Holyfield and fellow Group 3 winner Prague who ran second in the Group 1 ATC Sires’ Produce in Sydney over ‘The Championships’.

The next best represented trainers are Chris Waller (12), followed by Tom Dabernig & Ben Hayes (9).

Current favourite in the all-in Caulfield Guineas odds at Ladbrokes.com.au is Flying Award for last year’s Melbourne Cup winning trainer Danny O’Brien.

The Shamus Award colt was a Black-Type Flemington winner on ANZAC Day over 1400m before an eye-catching second in the Group 3 H.D.F. McNeil Stakes (1200m) on Caulfield on August 29.

Third in that same Guineas lead-up was the resuming Blue Diamond winner Tagaloa, the Trent Busuttin & Natalie Young-trained Lord Kanaloa colt looking to return to his Group 1 winning form from the autumn.

Already proven at a mile in top grade, the Peter & Paul Snowden-trained King’s Legacy is another standout Caulfield Guineas hope this spring.

Co-trainer Peter Snowden has prepared three previous Caulfield Guineas winners having won the classic with Helmet (2011), Long John (2013) and Shooting To Win (2014).

King’s Legacy looks his best hope at a fourth win in the feature and his first in partnership with his son Paul.

Along with Tagaloa and King’s Legacy, the other Group 1 winning juvenile entered for the mile feature is Golden Slipper champ Farnan.

The Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott-trained Not A Single Doubt colt has won five of his six career starts ahead of his spring return on Saturday in the Group 2 $200,000 The Run To The Rose in Sydney.

Other noteworthy chances include the now Peter Moody-trained Glenfiddich and Hawkes Racing’s Group 3 Up & Coming Stakes winner first-up North Pacific.

Runner-up to King’s Legacy in the Group 1 Champagne Classic when trained by Robbie Griffiths, progressive Fastnet Rock colt Glenfiddich made an immediate impact with Moody running third in the Group 1 Memsie Stakes (1400m) first-up at Caulfield on August 29.

He was the first three-year-old to tackle the race in around 30 years and Moody indicated he may be kept fresh without another lead-up into the Caulfield Guineas.

Many of the standout withdrawals from the event are those three-year-olds being kept focused on the sprint features including Anders, Rothfire and Hanseatic.

Caulfield Guineas second acceptances close on Tuesday September 22.
