Godolphin three-year-old filly Colette is now the favourite ahead of next week’s Group 1 Australian Oaks (2400m) thanks to a very impressive win in Saturday’s Group 3 Adrian Knox Stakes (2000m) at Royal Randwick.

Colette was installed as the favourite in the capacity field after rising through the grades to win back-to-back starts. The filly by Hallowed Crown won by two lengths in a Benchmark 64 Handicap at Kembla Grange a fortnight ago and seemed to enjoy the gap between runs winning by a similar margin on Saturday.

After swooping in late on the leading Quintessa, the patience of in-form jockey James McDonald more than proved the difference. Quintessa took up the lead at the 300m mark after battling hard against Dorothy of Oz, before McDonald gave chase on the outside to take over at the 100m mark.

Colette has now firmed from $7.00 into $3.20 for the 2020 Australian Oaks with Ladbrokes.com.au with trainer James Cummings stating that he plans to head that way if his filly pulls up okay.

“We treated her with kid gloves coming into it with a long range plan to target an Adrian Knox, which can suit a filly on the way through like her,” Cummings said.

“She might just set up nicely and be an interesting addition to the Oaks next week if we’re very, very pleased with the way she is the next seven days.”

Light Fingers in 1965 remains the only horse to complete the Adrian Knox – Australian Oaks double, but McDonald still thinks the promising young three-year-old is a chance if she gets going early.

“A lot was going for her today. She needs to probably bring it again in a weeks’ time but she is more than capable of doing it,” McDonald said.

“To be fair, these were probably the B-graders compared to what the Vinery have come up against. All she has done is won in good style and you couldn’t knock that. She is going to have to lift again I feel.”

Toffee Tongue also caught the eye after punters backed her into $11.00 at the jump. The Chris Waller filly by Tavistock was $101 in the all-in ATC Oaks 2020 odds at Ladbrokes.com.au and has since firmed majorly into $16.00.

Group 1 Surround Stakes winner Probabeel is now the second-elect at $4.20 followed by last weeks surprise Vinery Stud Stakes winner Shout The Bar at $4.60.
