Last Saturday the punters lost out when roughie hope Samadoubt won the first elite level in Sydney for the spring – the Group 1 $500,000 Winx Stakes (1400m).
This weekend they will be hoping for a better result with short odds on the Godolphin-raced Alizee – a potential runner to fill their slot in the $14 million The Everest (1400m) in October – to win the Group 1 $1 million New Zealand Bloodstock Memsie Stakes (1400m).
The official 2019 Memsie Stakes nominations were taken on Monday with a bumper 17 early entries for the early Cox Plate lead-up.
Alizee is pays $2.80 in pre-field betting on the Memsie Stakes after the daughter of Sepoy returned to winning form first-up in the Group 2 Missile Stakes (1200m) at Rosehill on August 10.
That was her first victory since her super-impressive Group 1 Futurity Stakes (1400m) triumph at the same track and distance as the Memsie back in late February.
Godolphin also have their grand campaigner Hartnell in the mix at $8, the nine-year-old coming off his fifth straight placing when running a first-up third in the P.B. Lawrence Stakes.
Hartnell chases his first win since the 2018 Epsom Handicap.
The reigning Memsie Stakes winner Humidor is back chasing successive wins in the event that he won 12 months ago ahead of three subsequent Group 1 thirds including behind Winx for her record-breaking fourth Cox Plate victory.
It is the third year Humidor lines-up in a Memsie Stakes field having also run eighth to Vega Magic in 2017 before his next-up win in the Group 1 Makybe Diva Stakes (1600m) by over three lengths.
The now seven-year-old son of Teofilo is after his maiden first-up win and is one of three nominees for Ciaron Maher & David Eustace.
The stable could also be represented by Doomben Cup winning mare Kenedna coming off a first-up seventh in the Group 2 P.B. Lawrence Stakes (1400m) and impressive runner-up in that same lead-up race Cliff’s Edge.
Five-year-old Canford Cliffs entire Cliff’s Edge was given a peach of a ride by jockey Mark Zahra in the P.B. Lawrence Stakes at Caulfield a fortnight ago when taken to the front attempting an all-the-way upset.
He was far from disgraced holding on for second after being run down late by the hot favourite and top fancy to take out the Group 1 $5 million Ladbrokes Cox Plate this year, Mystic Journey.
The latest all-in Memsie Stakes odds at Ladbrokes.com.au have Cliff’s Edge as the $7 third pick to go one better on Saturday.
The other early single-figure hope in the markets is $6 second elect Scales Of Justice out to atone for his last start second as the beaten odds-on favourite in Adelaide’s Group 3 Spring Stakes (1200m).
Another standout Memsie Stakes nominee is the flying Begood Toya Mother who is favoured to win the Group 1 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes (1400m) at the same track and distance next month having won his past six straight starts.
The Memsie Stakes final field of acceptances and barriers will be announced on Wednesday morning followed by updated odds at Ladbrokes.com.au.
