The Group 1 $1m Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m) at Flemington at the beginning of the 2018 Melbourne Cup Carnival is the Spring target for today/s Vain Stakes winner Tony Nicconi.
The Lindsay Park Team of David and Ben Hayes and Tom Dabernig were able to quinella the Group 3 $150,000 KS Enviromental Vain Stakes (1100m) with Tony Nicconi ($2.30 favourite) holding on to beat his fast finishing stablemate Long Leaf ($6).
The Darren Weir trained Native Soldier ($13) was a close up third.
Tony Nicconi was only having his second race start after scoring a four lengths maiden win in a 1200m two year old Handicap at Caulfield at the end of June and will step out again in the Group 3 $150,000 H.D.F. McNeil Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield on September 1 on his way to the Coolmore Stud Stakes.
David Hayes was very impressed with the way Tony Nicconi raced into the strong head wind and he was also impressed with the way Long Leaf found the line.
“Tony NIcconi because he did it into that hard wind,” Hayes said.
“He has only gone into it on one trial and there is a lot left for him in the Spring.”
“And Long Leaf was terrific. First up and a long way short of his distance and out his hand up for the Golden Rose, I think.”
Hayes rates Toni Nicconi and Long Leaf at the top of his best three year olds heading into the Spring Carnival.
Hayes said that he will keep Tony NIcconi to the three year old sprinting races while Long Leaf will be set for the Group 1 $1m De Bortoli Wines Golden Rose Stakes (1400m) at Rosehill on September 22 and the Group 1 $2m Ladbrokes Caulfield Guineas (1600m) at Caulfield on October 13.
