The Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott-trained second-up specialist Sedanzer saluted for the punters on Friday with a gutsy win in the Scone Cup 2018 on way to a possible Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival bid.
The four-year-old daughter of Sebring made it four-from-four second-up, improving on her first-up ninth when only three lengths beaten fresh, to take out the Listed $200,000 Darley Scone Cup (1600m) as the race favourite.
She ran a big race on April 28 in the Group 3 Hawkesbury Crown (1300m) carrying 56kg and relished the drop back to just 53.5kg in the Scone Cup against the open field off milers.
Sedanzer also enjoyed the step-up in distance and posted her first turf triumph since December last year, in-form jockey Tim Clark retaining the ride for the tough Scone Cup success that handed her Widden Stud-based sire Sebring his 42nd stakes success.
From barrier five Sedanzer, who jumped the $4.60 favourite at Ladbrokes.com.au, got posted three wide throughout and never got on the track.
Fellow four-year-old mare Lubiton meanwhile jumped brilliantly to lead the Scone Cup field around from last start Hawkesbury Cup winner Kingsguard with the well-backed New Tipperary up on the speed in third.
Mid-race Cool Chap got off the track, doing plenty of work to go forward and settle third, while Sedanzer was still caught three deep just off the front pack.
With 500m left to run, Lubiton swung the corner in front but was quickly tackled on the straight.
Sedanzer was making up ground on the outside, while the defending Scone Cup winner Duca Valentinois from the Godolphin stable was the widest for the run home.
New Tipperary got zero luck and was pushed out of winning contention, while Sedanzer and the 59kg top weight Duca Valentinois speed to the front together.
They fought it out in an exciting two horse race to the line, Sedanzer digging deep to hold off last year’s champ who was gallant in defeat giving all the weight away.
That took nothing away from the win by Sedanzer however who ran deep all the way before saluting by a neck, while the Scone Cup trifecta was rounded out two lengths further back by the Team Hawkes-rained Kingsguard.
A possible trip up to Queensland for the winter riches could now be on the cards for the Scone Cup winner Sedanzer who holds a nomination for Doomben’s Group 1 $1.5 million Stradbroke Handicap (1350m) in June.
Better over further, she is more likely however to tackle a longer distanced race like the Group 3 $125,000 Lord Mayor’s Cup (1600m) over the mile on Queensland Oaks Day, May 26, at Doomben.
