Queensland Oaks Hope Torvill Heads 2018 The Roses Nominations

Dual Queensland Oaks winning trainer Clarry Conners will chase a third win in the Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival classic this season and saddles-up his Group 1-bound filly Torvill in The Roses 2018 in the lead-up this weekend.

There are twenty-five fillies nominated for Saturday’s Group 2 $175,000 Magic Millions The Roses (2000m) on Doomben 10,000 Day in Brisbane, the bulk of which are eyeing a return to track on May 26 in the Group 1 $500,000 Queensland Oaks (2200m).

The Queensland Oaks is traditionally run over 2400m at Eagle Farm Racecourse, but takes place over a shorter distance at Doomben this winter due to the ongoing track work at Eagle Farm.

Sydney horseman Conners has prepared two previous Queensland Oaks winners with Zagalia (2003) and Allow (2006), and he looks to have a genuine contender with Torvill this season.

The progressive daughter of Not A Single Doubt was last seen winning the Listed The Bracelet (1360m) at Doomben on April 28 when overcoming barrier 15 of 15 in the mile showdown.

She is up in distance this weekend looking to keep the wins coming and also has Group 1 form from the autumn when second to Shoals in the Surround Stakes (1400m) in Sydney.

Torvill sits top of the pre-field The Roses odds at $4 through Ladbrokes.com.au and is the current $8 equal favourite in futures Queensland Oaks betting with Savacool.

Close second elect in early Doomben Roses 2018 betting at $5 is the Chris Waller-trained Youngstar ($5).

Waller won the Queensland Oaks last year with Egg Tart (2017) and two years before that with now the world’s best racehorse Winx (2015).

He is back this winter with four The Roses nominations heading towards the feature including the in-form Youngstar chasing her third win on the trot after easy victories at Hawkesbury (1500m) and Newcastle (1885m) last month.

The latest saw the daughter of High Chaparral salute by over three lengths suggesting she will relish the step-up to 2000m on Saturday for her black-type debut.

Waller’s other Doomben Roses nominees are So You Think filly Impulsive, Miss Shanti who is a well-bred daughter of Pierro and the ultra-consistent Another Dollar.

Ocean Park filly Another Dollar is at $7 for the win pre-field having run top three in all five of her career starts to date, most recently finishing runner-up to Torvill in The Bracelet.

The other The Roses nominated fillies the bookies are taking no early chances with include last start Caulfield winner over the mile Snogging ($6) and Michael Moroney’s The Bracelet fourth placed grey Play That Song ($8).

The official Doomben Roses 2018 field and barriers are set for release on Wednesday morning making now the time to check out the markets on it and the Queensland Oaks now through Ladbrokes.com.au.
