2018 South Australian Derby Field & Barriers: Tangled Caught Wide

The South Australian Derby 2018 final field for Saturday at Morphettville Racecourse is now out with a capacity line-up of three-year-old stayers including the widely drawn Chris Waller-trained Tangled.

The latest elite level of the Adelaide Autumn Racing Carnival, this weekend’s Group 1 $600,000 South Australian Derby (2500m) attracted a full line-up of 16 hopefuls plus four emergencies.

Drawn out in barrier 15, which could become 12 with the emergencies out, is one of the top early favourites in SA Derby betting Tangled.

The Snitzel colt chases his first win since saluting in Doomben’s Group 2 Champagne Classic (1200m) exactly 12 months ago, but has been competitive in plenty since.

Tangled has been tested in Group 1 class six times for three top three runs including his Rosehill Guineas second and ATC Derby third this autumn in Sydney.

His latest start on April 21 at Randwick produced a devastatingly close second to Higher Ground in the Group 3 Frank Packer Plate (2000m) and coming back up in distance with Michael Walker retaining the ride are big plusses for the weekend.

Victoria’s leading horseman Darren Weir prepared last year’s SA Derby winner Volatile Mix (2017) and Howard Be Thy Name (2016) the autumn before.

Weir will chase a third straight South Australian Derby success on Saturday having accepted for four stablemates.

Among Weir’s contingent in barrier nine with Damian Lane booked for the ride is last start Group 3 SA Chairman’s Stakes (2035m) winner in Adelaide from April 28 Leicester.

The Wanted gelding has his third run in Adelaide on the trot in the SA Derby field looking to do the double Howard Be Thy Name (2016) achieved two years ago.

The other best out of the Chairman’s Stakes backing-up in the South Australian Derby this weekend are the Mathew Ellerton & Simon Zahra-trained runner-up High ‘N’ Dry drawn right out in barrier 18 and the Weir-trained third placegetter Amerock with the outside gate in the Group 1.

Weir’s other runners are Tasmanian Derby winner Civil Disobedience and Dean Yendall’s mount Savaheat.

Along with Leicester the other most notable last start winner in the SA Derby this autumn is the Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Both-trained Runaway.

The Manhattan Rain rig made it two on the trot last time out at Flemington on ANZAC Day saluting by one and a half-lengths in the Listed VRC St Leger (2800m).

The genuine stayer in the race, the up-and-comer looks hard to beat over 2500m with Stephen Baster in the saddle again.

Other notable SA Derby horses include the consistent WA raider Money Maher coming off a lead-up fourth in the Group 2 WATC Derby (2400m) and Lindsay Park’s VRC St Leger runner-up Rezealient.
