The 10 horse field for this season’s Group 2 $200,000 Hyland Race Colours Ajax Stakes (1500m) is full of depth and betting at Ladbrokes.com.au has six of the runners under $10.
Narrow favourite in the Ajax Stakes odds at $4 is Comin’ Through for Chris Waller, the Fastnet Rock four-year-old hitting the line hard and fast first-up for the close third to stablemate Endless Drama in the Group 2 Apollo Stakes (1400m).
With winning form up to a mile, the step-up to 1500m second-up will suit and if he gets a Soft track could be hard to hold out from the gun gate two draw with flying hoop Michael Walker coming on for the ride.
Second favourite in Ajax Stakes betting this autumn and another one of the five hopes in the line-up for Waller is Tom Melbourne ($4.80) drawn to get a soft run from barrier four.
Dubbed a perennial placegetter after his string of second placings during the spring, the consistent Dylan Thomas seven-year-old has a credible first-up record (6:2-2-0) and the 1500m for his campaign kick-off should suit on the back of two nice trials.
The other main danger occupying the third line of betting at $5.50 is Prized Icon, winner of the 2016 VRC Derby as a three-year-old and looking to be hitting similar form this autumn as a four-year-old.
The valuable More Than Ready entire is Kris Lees-trained and fourth-up off three nice lead-ups including the Apollo Stakes fourth and last start second to the world’s best Winx in the Group 1 Chipping Norton Stakes (1600m).
This is easier and his place record at Rosehill is very good (6:0-3-1), but could he be looking for a little more distance?

1st
#3 Comin’ Through ($4)
It is a wide open race but looks like the bookies have it right, Comin’ Through shaping-up as a pretty hard to beat favourite still at a backable price. He will have come on fitness wise after the close first-up third in the Apollo Stakes and the month between runs has him fresh again. Winning form up to 1600m so this is the right distance. Walker is flying after doing the Australian Cup – Adelaide Cup double and he’s got winning form on this horse with back-to-back Randwick victories last campaign over Life Less Ordinary and Tom Melbourne – both rivals again this weekend – respectively.
2nd
#7 Cellarman ($9.50)
Waller comes in with a powerhouse contingent and looking very well-weighted for the stable is the in-form Cellarman who has won four of his past five starts including his last three on the trot. This is an obvious rise in class for the Mossman four-year-old, but the back-to-back victories over this track / distance carrying far more weight suggest he is up to the challenge. 58.5kg and 56kg on his back respectively in February, comes down to 53kg and Brenton Avdulla comes aboard.
3rd
#1 Prized Icon ($5.50)
Giving the weight away with 58kg is this multiple Group 1 winner. He’s already worth a packet at stud, but could have more elite level success in him the way he has been building this season. Unsure what his pet distance is now, but hard to knock the form of running second to Winx in a Group 1 last time out. Definite claims at a track he’s got plenty of place form at (6:0-3-1).
