The Caulfield Cup 2017 will be run and won on Saturday afternoon with 17 stayers facing off in the world’s richest mile-and-a-half handicap, but what three horses will complete the Caulfield Cup trifecta?
Due to run as Caulfield Race 8 at 4:30pm (AEDT), this season’s Group 1 $3.15 million BMW Caulfield Cup (2400m) is an open race with four single-figure fancies in the latest markets at Ladbrokes.com.au.
One of the three internationally-trained Caulfield Cup horses is leading the odds at $4.40, the Aidan O’Brien-trained Johannes Vermeer tipped to handle the seven day turnaround after the fast-finishing second in last weekend’s Group 1 Ladbrokes Stakes (2000m).
The dangers according to the bookies include the firming Bonneval ($7.50) who is back in favouritism with punters after being cleared to run late Thursday afternoon and the Darren Weir-trained top weight Humidor ($8.50).
There’s also money for the fellow Weir-trained Amelie’s Star ($9.50), a dour staying mare with the impressive Group 3 The Bart Cummings (2500m) win last time out to prove her ability.
So will the best in Caulfield Cup betting dominate or is there value tipping the double-figure fancies to steal the show?
We’ve already summed up the 2017 Caulfield Cup Horses: Back or Sack? and provided our 2017 Caulfield Cup Form: Two Words on Each Horse.
Now it is time for our insider Caulfield Cup 2017 Trifecta Tip with the best three fancies to get behind this weekend at Ladbrokes.com.au.
Think the odds on this Lindsay Park-trained import are attractive and he is the horse with upside set to peak in the big one. Before Mongolian Khan (2015) and Jameka (2016), the previous seven winners did it at double-figures. This horse is drawn to get the run of the race from barrier four and Damien Oliver has ridden four Caulfield Cup champions. A maiden down under; that can change on the weekend with the Zoffany entire dropping to 54kg. Was runner-up to Winx in the Turnbull Stakes last time out, the same lead-up performance as Jameka 12 months ago, and he held Humidor’s measure that day. Winning form over this distance in Europe and from four 2200m plus runs he has three wins and a second. Right weight, draw, jockey, form. It all stacks-up.
There are too many boxes ticked by the Caulfield Cup favourite to leave him out. He won a Group 1 on a seven day turnaround earlier in his career so the short turnaround is a non-issue. Ben Melham will settle him closer to the pace on Saturday, instructions to be third – fifth in the run and he’s got a brilliant finishing burst. Yet to win over further than 2011m, but the blistering late sectionals for the Ladbrokes Stakes second suggest he’ll see out the 2400m without a worry coming back from 59kg to 54.5kg. They will take advantage of barrier two and the well-supported raider will be hard to hold out.
There are so many genuine roughie hopes to fill the placings in this year’s Caulfield Cup finishing order, but have to go with the Archie Alexander-trained Herbert Power Stakes winner at the track / distance last Saturday out to do the double last completed by Master O’Reilly (2007). He is on just 50kg and will be flying. Hasn’t been set for this, but proven at the track / distance and his 2400m form is imposing (6-3-1-0). Weighted and drawn to win in the race’s most successful barrier (9) from the past 30 years.
