Kris Lees’ mare Danish Twist is firming favourite in the Ladbrokes Moonga Stakes 2017 field and betting markets to return to winning form on Caulfield Cup Day this weekend.
Due to run as Caulfield Race 6 at 3:10pm (AEDT), this season’s Group 3 $150,000 Ladbrokes Moonga Stakes (1400m) features 11 hopefuls and Danish Twist is drawn barrier nine.
The ‘Magic Man’ Joao Moreira is booked to ride the mare third-up and Danish Twist leads Moonga Stakes odds online at race sponsor paying $4.20 as she returns to Melbourne for the first time in 12 months.
She has firmed in from $4.80 carrying the 54kg light weight of the race at set weights plus penalties and looks to have upside on the back of her fourth in the Group 2 Golden Pendant (1400m) at Rosehill on September 23.
That was against her own kind, but the form was franked with the Ron Quinton-trained quinella of Daysee Doom and Dixie Blossoms running top two again in reverse order next start.
It is an open edition of the Ladbrokes Moonga Stakes this spring with a further four single-figure fancies including Grande Rosso and Eckstein at $5.50 each.
Craig Williams partners the Lindsay Park-trained Written Tycoon six-year-old Grande Rosso from a nice barrier three drawn on Saturday.
The horse is down in grade on the back of a ninth at the track / distance in the Group 1 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes (1400m) on October 1.
Prior to that he saluted over 1400m here carrying 59kg and the easier company on the weekend puts him right in the mix again.
Eckstein meanwhile jumps from an outside barrier (10 of 11) with Hugh Bowman in the saddle of the four-year-old daughter of I Am Invincible.
Kurt Goldman’s mare is looking to improve on her lead-up seventh at Flemington in the Group 2 Blazer Stakes (1400m) when just over two lengths beaten by the winner Now Or Later.
She hasn’t won since the Group 3 Glenlogan Park Stakes (1300m) in Brisbane over the winter and Saturday marks her Caulfield race debut.
The other best in betting are Ulmann ($6.50) and All Our Roads ($7.50) drawn in barriers four and 11 respectively.
Darren Weir trains Sebring six-year-old Ulmann who was last seen running three lengths back sixth behind Keen Array down the Flemington straight in the Group 2 Gilgai Stakes (1200m).
The gelding should be fitter second-up and has previous winning form at the Caulfield track, plus the good Group 3 BRC Sprint (1350m) third behind Jungle Edge in Brisbane back in May over a similar distance.
All Our Roads is the 58.5kg top weight drawn the far outside gate for Kerrin McEvoy, but the bookies are taking no chances with the progressive Chris Waller-trained Road To Rock six-year-old.
The Kiwi expat has had just the one run down under when third at Randwick over this distance on October 7 and is the unknown in the mix.
