Peter & Paul Snowden look to have uncovered a potential miler to watch in the future with a big debut at Royal Randwick from the Hugh Bowman-ridden Satin Slipper in the Gimcrack Stakes 2017 on Epsom Handicap Day.
Bowman made it two-from-two on the card coming off a big victory in the first on the Chris Waller-trained 2018 Golden Slipper-bound colt Performer in the Breeders’ Plate.
One race later and Bowman was back in the winners’ circle saluting in the fillies’ edition on well-bred Pierro filly Satin Slipper in the Listed $150,000 Gimcrack Stakes (1000m).
Bowman was thrilled to ride the progressive youngster to victory having partnered her moth Satin Shoes for her 2011 win in the Group 2 Silver Slipper Stakes (1100m).
Satin Slipper ($6.50) really did well late to hold off the Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott-trained Choisir filly Setsuna ($21) who was finishing off the race nicely, while from a wide barrier the Chris Waller-trained Fiesta ($13) held for third with the ‘Magic Man’ Joao Moreira in the saddle.
Bowman was even more impressed by the Gimcrack Stakes win by Satin Shoes as he rated her more of a future miler than a sprinter, and admitted that he wasn’t as confident going into the race as he had been on Performer.
“I was very confident with the colt because I’d trialled him, this filly I didn’t trial but I did ride her in work this week,” he said post-win.
“I was pleased with how she felt, but I wasn’t as confident on her.
“The Snowden two-year-olds are so well prepared and she’ll be a much better filly in six months; time.
“She’s a lovely filly in the making.
“The thousand metres isn’t her go. It wouldn’t surprise me to see her go to a mile in time.”
Bowman had the eventual Gimcrack Stakes winner settled off the pace as the Lee Curtis-trained roughie Meryl led the field around.
She was followed around by Setsuna, while the Brad Widdup-trained favourite Witherspoon had a tough run throughout from the outside barrier finding herself caught very deep.
On the straight Meryl was overtaken by Setsuna who hit the lead, but in a big late run Satin Slipper stole the show turning it into a thrilling photo finish.
Satin Slipper dived right on the line, stretching her neck out to get up in a nice first-up run showing above average ability and the nice education common of the Team Snowden-trained juveniles.
The winning time in the Gimcrack Stakes was 58.03 seconds, notably slower than the 56.82 time clocked by the Breeders’ Plate winning colt Performer.
