Voodoo Lad scores first up win in 2017 The Heath 1100

The Darren Weir trained Voodoo Lad lived up to his excellent fresh record to score a first up win in the Group 3 $150,000 The Heath 1100m (1100m) at Caulfield today.

Winning jockey Brad Rawiller was having his third ride on Voodoo Lad and made it a perfect score after wins at Warrnambool in April 2016 and at Caulfield in October 2016.

Rawiller settled Voodoo Lad midfield but said he had to make his move earlier than he wanted to after the six year old was keen to get going once heads were turned for home.

Rawiller was able to find clear running and Voodoo Lad ($3.60) picked up momentum down the middle of the track to claim victory over the fast finishing So Si Bon ($13) with Crystal Dreamer ($11) holding down third spot.

Race favourite Sheidel ($2) settled behind the leader Runson but struggled to find the front in the straight to wind up in fourth spot.

“I am undefeated on him.” Rawiller said.

“He was well placed today, he has always gone good at Caulfield. He likes to be kept fresh.”

“There is plenty left in store for this bloke. Hopefully there will be a real nice race for him in the Spring.”

“He gave me a great ride today. A little bit strong in the middle stages. Probably going a fraction early. Darren said make sure you save him till late and you will see the best of him.”

Weir said that he still has to finalise a Spring Carnival program for Voodoo Lad.
