Consistent mare Hell Or Highwater made it a hat trick of wins with her victory in the Listed $120,000 Dream Thoroughbred Heatherlie Stakes (1700m) at Caulfield today.
Hell Or Highwater was coming off two wins in restricted grade to give the Lindsay Park Team of David and Ben Hayes and Tom Dabernig back to back wins at Caulfield after taking the previous race, the Group 1 $1m New Zealand Bloodstock Memsie Stakes (1400m), with Vega Magic.
Winning jokey Dean Yendall was happy to be re-united with Hell Or Highwater after having won on the mare twice in November and December last year.
Yendall was able to get Hell Or Highwater ($4.80 favourite) out of the barriers running and sat outside the leader before kicking strongly in the straight to score a comfortable win over the Darren Weir trained pair of Guardini ($26) and Amelie’s Star ($9).
Hell Or Highwater’s win in the Heatherlie Stakes has increased her value as a brood mare with that win at Listed level and David Hayes is thinking of stepping her up to Group 2 level in the $300,000 Matriarch Stakes (2000m) at Flemington over the Melbourne Cup Carnival.
“It was so important for her to win a black type race,” David Hayes said.
“To win one at the level really cranks her value.”
“She raced well all Winter and will keep racing well.”
“The 2000m mares race, The Matriarch at Flemington over Cup week.”
