Winx Dominates 2017 Chelmsford Stakes Nominations

Chris Waller’s outstanding mare Winx continues her spring campaign that will culminate with a shot at an historic third Cox Plate success dominating the Chelmsford Stakes 2017 nominations in Sydney this weekend.

The public enjoyed their first look at the superstar daughter of Street Cry a fortnight back when Winx overcame a missed kick to come from last to first in the Group 2 Warwick Stakes (1400m).

The gun six-year-old gets earmuffs on for the first time second-up on Saturday at Royal Randwick when she looks to extend her exciting winning streak to 19 straight in the Group 2 $250,000 Chelmsford Stakes (1600m).

Her mile record is near flawless with six wins and a second from seven previous attempts at the Chelmsford Stakes distance and Winx will start odds-on favourite in the markets at Ladbrokes.com.au this weekend.

Success will see her continue towards chasing down the 25 straight wins of Black Caviar, 19 victories to see her sit equal with former champs Gloaming and Desert Gold.

Waller is thrilled with how Winx came through the nail-biter in the Warwick Stakes and said she was tracking perfectly towards a third-up run in the Group 1 George Main Stakes on September 16 before heading south.

“I’m pleased to be running her on Saturday because it is about ticking all the boxes and making sure she is on song for the George Main,” Waller told The Daily Telegraph this week.

“She will wear earmuffs and with them on it should ensure she jumps on terms with them.

“I want to run her in the Chelmsford so she does everything 100 per cent and that will give her confidence going into the spring.”

Despite the inclusion of the dual Cox Plate champion, the Chelmsford Stakes nominations attracted 16 early entries on Monday.

Waller is behind eight of the hopefuls including gun four-year-old Foxwedge mare Foxplay who looked the upset winner until the closing stages of the Warwick Stakes last time out.

Foxplay finished runner-up as an $18 roughie behind her star stablemate on August 19 and despite being nominated for a rematch on Saturday, will not be accepted into the Chelmsford Stakes field.

“Foxplay had a very hard run that day so I will either run her in the Tramway Stakes on Saturday or wait another week with her,” Waller explained.

Among Waller’s other possible Chelmsford Stakes contenders are a host of staying types including Sydney and Melbourne Cup placegetter Who Shot Thebarman, the veteran nine-year-old racing for the first time since his Sydney Cup second over two miles in April.

Waller’s contingent also includes the likes of Tom Melbourne and 2017 The Metropolitan-bound Shocking gelding Antonio Giuseppe who comes off a Warwick Stakes fifth beaten five lengths first-up.

Outside of the dominant Waller clan other key Chelmsford Stakes nominations this Sydney Spring Racing Carnival include returning Brisbane Cup winner Chocante, the Lindsay Park-trained He’s Our Rokkii coming off a PB Lawrence Stakes fourth in Melbourne behind Hartnell and Kris Lees’ Doomben Cup champ Sense Of Occasion.
