2017 Ramornie Handicap Nominations & Weights

Nominations and weights for the Ramornie Handicap 2017 on Day 1 of the Grafton Cup Carnival next Wednesday are now out with The Monstar allocated top kilos for the winter sprint feature.

One of the key feature races of the Clarence River Jockey Club’s premier few days of racing, this season’s $160,000 Listed Ramornie Handicap (1200m) attracted a bumper 35 nominations.

Heading the list of early entries as well as the Ramornie Handicap weights with 59.5kg is the Brett Cavanough-trained six-year-old The Monstar.

Winner of Randwick’s Listed June Stakes (1100m) in the mud early last month, the consistent sprinter was last seen running a half-length second in a brave effort at Rosehill on July 1 in the Listed Civic Stakes (1350m) behind Gold Symphony.

The Monstar may be heavily-weighted, but the son of California Dane is used to carting the kilos and will enjoy coming back to 1200m for the Ramornie Handicap.

The other heaviest-weighted sprinter among the Ramornie Handicap nominations this season is the Ron Quinton-trained Boss Lane (57.5kg) coming off a brilliant last start win at Randwick.

The Dubawi six-year-old relished a Heavy (8) track on June 24, running away for a three and a half-length win in the Winter Dash (1200m).

Also high up the Ramornie Handicap ballot and weights are the Kelly Doughty-trained Flamboyer (56kg) and Peter & Paul Snowden’s class mare Flippant (55.5kg).

Gold Coast-based Clang gelding Flamboyer comes off close back-to-back fourths in black-type sprints over the Queensland Winter Racing Carnival.

He was only a half-length beaten as a $21 roughie at Ipswich from a wide alley (15 of 16) behind Monsieur Gustave in the Listed Eye Liner Stakes (1350m), before finishing under two lengths off the same horse for fourth in the Listed Glasshouse Handicap (1400m) on July 1 at the Sunshine Coast.

Flamboyer will drop a half-kilo on his Glasshouse Handicap weight if accepted for the Ramornie Handicap and will also be back down to 1200m, a distance he’s got plenty of form over (23-6-1-6).

Flippant is a four-year-old daughter of Hinchinbrook who was on fire in February at Randwick running third in both the Group 2 Breeders Classic (1200m) and Group 2 Guy Walter Stakes (1400m).

She’s had just the one run since when fifth first-up at Doomben behind Burning Passion in the Group 3 W.J. Healy Stakes (1200m) and will be improving second-up fitness wise heading to Grafton.

Team Snowden have also nominated for their last-start winning three-year-old son of Snitzel Calanda who took out an 1100m Rosehill sprint on July 1 in open-age company.

Equal first on the order of entry with The Monstar and Boss Lane meanwhile is the flying Paul Murray-trained mare Termele chasing a third win on the trot.

Well-weighted on the 54kg minimum, the consistent daughter of Krupt was last seen winning the John Carlton Cup (1206m) at Grafton on Thursday, a key Ramornie Handicap lead-up.

Other notable nominees include the James Cummings-trained Commands four-year-old Badajoz who has run top two in his six latest starts going back to August last year and John Carlton Cup third placed veteran Aomen.

Check out the full Ramornie Handicap 2017 nominations and weights below, the final field set for release on Monday followed by markets at Ladbrokes.com.au.
