The Belmont Winter Racing Carnival continues in W.A. this weekend and below are our insider Hyperion Stakes 2017 betting tips plus the latest odds on the mile showdown.
A smart field of 10 horses take to the Belmont track in Race 7 on Saturday for this season’s $150,000 Group 3 Hyperion Stakes (1600m).
Betting on the weight-for-age mile showdown at Ladbrokes.com.au is dominated by the Lindsey Smith’s Group 1 winner Scales Of Justice who is going “good as gold” according to his trainer.
Daniel Staeck retains the ride after guiding the reigning Railway Stakes champ to a close second at the track first-up a fortnight ago in the Group 3 Belmont Sprint (1400m).
Fitter for the run, where he had to work hard after getting trapped from the outside barrier (12 of 12), four-year-old Scales Of Justice looks hard to beat this weekend getting out over a distance he is undefeated over (2-2-0-0).
The bookies agree and Scales Of Justice sits top of the Hyperion Stakes odds at $1.45.
The danger is the Bob Peters-owned Disposition ($3.80) coming off a third in the Belmont Sprint, but whether he can turn the tables remains to be seen with the former Victorian galloper’s winning form only extending out to 1400m to date.
So will the two best in Hyperion Stakes betting run the quinella on the weekend or is there a major upset pending from the likes of grey galloper Pounamu ($14) or Zarantz ($21) a last start winner over two miles?
1st
#1 Scales Of Justice ($1.45)
There’s no value in the Hyperion Stakes this year and it is hard to see anything getting past Scales Of Justice again. He got caught for a run first-up, but has a better barrier here and is back up to a mile. He’ll be improving, is fitter, is a Group 1 winner, loves Belmont (6-2-3-1), is unbeaten over the distance (2-2-0-0) and only bad luck will see him beaten.
2nd
#6 Miki Two Toes ($51)
Going the roughie for value to run a sneaky second, this Belmont track specialist looking a little overs despite the notable rise in grade. The Lark Hill-based seven-year-old has his 33rd run at the track (32-6-3-5) and comes off a win here over 1650m under 57.5kg in a Benchmark 72+ from last weekend. In arguably career-best form, obviously needs to improve against these horses at WFA, but is a chance.
3rd
#3 Disposition ($3.80)
The second best horse in the race at the second shortest odds and he’ll be in the money. Ran a close third in the Belmont Sprint and is a dual runner-up from four runs at a mile. The extra distance doesn’t really work for him, but jockey William Pike has been singing him praises all week.
