Saturday’s Royal Randwick black-type is a wide open affair betting-wise with over half the June Stakes 2017 field at single-figures for the win.
Heading the Sydney racing action on the weekend as Randwick Race 7 at 3:10pm (AEST), the field for this season’s $150,000 Listed AHC June Stakes (1100m) is down to a dozen sprinters after the early scratching of Santa Ana Lane (2).
Updated June Stakes betting at Ladbrokes.com.au is no help to the punters with seven of the remaining short-distance specialists under $10 to take out the handicap clash.
Current $6.50 co-favourites are early market mover The Monstar and the well-weighted Princefamous.
The Monstar has been backed in from $8 to post his first win since the Listed Razor Sharp Handicap (1200m) at Randwick back in December last year.
Two back he was outclassed as a $101 roughie in Brisbane’s Group 1 Doomben 10,000 (1200m) finishing second last (12th) behind Redzel.
He returned to Randwick on May 27 and finished only two lengths third to Kudero, a rival again in the June Stakes field, carrying 60kg at the same track and distance of Saturday June Stakes.
In a big plus for Brett Cavanough’s Scone-trained six-year-old, The Monstar comes back to 57.5kg in the June Stakes weights and should be peaking third-up on a rain-affected track.
Princefamous gets in on the 53kg minimum with Travis Wolfgram riding the Peter & Paul Snowden-trained Fast ‘N’ Famous five-year-old first-up.
A fresh specialist, Princefamous boasts three wins from four previous first-up runs and enjoyed a recent trial win at Rosehill leading up to his return on Saturday.
Three runners then follow on $7 as the equal second elects in June Stakes betting with the 59kg top weight Felines for Newcastle’s Kris Lees, the Gerald Ryan-trained Zariz gelding Inz’n’out and Grunderzeit from the powerhouse Godolphin stables.
Conatus mare Felines may be giving the weight away to her rivals and going up from 58.5kg last time out, but the bookmakers are hesitant to leave her out of the mix.
She’s got outstanding Randwick track form (11-4-1-2) and was far from disgraced as a $26 outsider in March when fifth to Russian Revolution at Rosehill in the Group 1 The Galaxy (1100m).
A Hawkesbury Rush win over That’s A Good Idea followed before she ran fifth at Scone last start on May 13 in the Listed Ortensia Stakes (1100m).
Inz’n’out is second-up on the weekend after leading throughout at the track and distance in the Cancer Foundation Handicap before being run down late to cross three lengths back for third.
He’ll be improving second-up and fitter for the run, drops a half-kilo to 53kg this weekend and in another plus is proven on Heavy going (4-1-1-1).
Street Cry five-year-old Grunderzeit meanwhile is out to atone for his recent runs out of the money including a second last (10th) at Scone in last month’s Listed Luskin Star (1300m).
The form of that race was franked in Brisbane a fortnight on when the winner Clearly Innocent took out the Group 1 Kingsford-Smith Cup (1300m) at Eagle Farm to earn favouritism in 2017 Stradbroke Handicap betting for this weekend.
Rounding out the top half of the market are then Clarry Conners’ last start winner at the track / distance over a number of these same rivals Kudero ($8) with the outside alley to overcome and Team Snowden’s Hinchinbrook mare Flippant ($9.50) running first-up on the mud track after back-to-back Group 2 thirds at Randwick in February.
