Toowoomba trainer Tony Sears said that here was an outside chance that Pardoe could line up in the J.J. Atkins next week after leading all of the way to win the Listed $100,000 Bracken Ridge Tavern The Phoenix (1350m) at Doomben today.
Sears isn’t keen himself to run Pardoe in the Group 1 $600,000 BMW Australia J.J. Atkins (1600m) for the two year oldds at Doomben next Saturday but said he would discuss it with his owners before making a final decision.
“My gut feeling is most probably no but I have an owner in Singapore who half owns him and the McAlpine family own him here,” Sears said.
“He would have to come through the run extremely well. There is not a lot of him but at this stage I would possibly be leaning towards giving him a break if he doesn’t come through the run good.”
Winning rider Hugh Bowman had no hesitation is taking Pardoe ($4) to the from but the colt took some time before he got into a nice rhythm, but was able to find enough in the straight to record a comfortable win over Italia Bella ($7) and Magnufighter ($9.50).
Favourite Snitzepeg ($2.90) was caught three wide for the entire trip from an outside barrier and was under hard riding on the home turn and faded in the straight to be one of the last over the line.
“Hughie said there wasn’t much pace in the race, he said he may have to lead. Well I said I was one of the worst jockeys around so I am not going to tell you how to ride him,” Sears said.
Sears said that he was confident going in today’s race and Pardoe delivered to record his fourth win from four starts this campaign.
“He has always shown very good ability from the start. I always sort of thought this itme in he is just going to progressively get better as goes further. I thought he was a pretty good thing today going to the 1350m.”
“A lot of people thought he was just a wet track but he is a pretty fair horse.”
Pardoe is listed as a $15 chance at Ladbrokes.com.au for the J.J. Atkins.
