Payroll collects the cash in Spear Chief Handicap, heads towards the Tattersall’s Tiara

Cranbourne trainer Richard Laming will freshen up his smart mare Payroll for the Group 1 Tattersall’s Tiara after she collected the cash in winning the Listed $100,000 City Property Services Spear Chief Handicap (1630m) at Doomben today.

A rails hugging ride by Damien Oliver saw Victorian trained mare Payroll come from last on the home turn to score a narrow win and Laming will now set her for the Group 1 $500,000 Sky Racing Tattersall’s Tiara (1350m) for the fillies and mares at Doomben on June 24.

“All our plans are up in the air at the moment because of what is happening with the tracks, we were going for the Tatts Tiara,” Laming said.

“We will have a good think about it and will have to bring her back in distance of course and we will see how she pulls up but is on the cards.”

Oliver elected to go back to last on Payroll ($5) from an inside barrier and ride for luck and he when he switched back to the inside at the top of the straight was able to find plenty of room up along the inside fence.

Payroll was able to accelerate through the gap and hold off Maryore ($15) who was finishing strongly down the middle of the track with on pace runner Double Impact ($26) holding on for third.

“He weaved his magic but that is why you put them on, the best jockeys and that why they get the results, typical of Oliver out there then,” Laming said.

“She didn’t have any luck (last start) and she showed all the signs that she was going to run well today.”

Unfortunately the $3.30 favourite High Midnight, who set the pace after crossing from a wide barrier, bled in the run and was eased down to finish last.
