The Godolphin-raced son of Dynaformer made it three wins on the trot this campaign, backing up from his Group 1 Doncaster Mile success in Sydney on April 1 to win the $358,000 Group 2 A.D. Hollindale Stakes (1800m).
Last season the galloper finished a luckless fifth to Leebaz in the Hollindale Stakes results, but he presented fit and ready to fire in 2017.
Taken to the front by hoop Tye Angland from his gun barrier three draw, the in-form galloper led all the way in the ideal lead-up into the $650,000 Group 1 Doomben Cup (2000m) in Brisbane on May 20.
Away sweeting from the gates, It’s Somewhat led the field around with Nick Olive’s smart mare Single Gaze right up on the speed with him creeping up into second ahead of the Chris Waller-trained Preferment.
There was a line of four around the turn for home, before Single Gaze let down and turned it into a two horse race over the final 200m with the favourite.
In the end It’s Somewhat was too strong, holding on by a head after giving a strong kick to defeat the outstanding runner-up.
Rounding out the AD Hollindale Stakes trifecta in third was the John Thompson-trained Maurus second-up off a third at Randwick from April 15.
It’s Somewhat was already favourite in futures Doomben Cup odds at Ladbrokes.com.au and will be even shorter in the markets for the weight-for-age feature that he placed third to Our Ivanhowe in last winter.
