2017 Gold Coast Guineas Results: Savanna Amour Wins

A Group run in Brisbane over the winter could be on the cards for the classy John Meagher-trained filly Savanna Amour after she beat home the boys in the Gold Coast Guineas 2017 on the weekend.

The daughter of Love Conquers All raced first-up in Saturday’s $125,000 Group 3 Gold Coast Guineas (1200m) jumping from a nice barrier six draw with Ronnie Stewart in the saddle.

It was her first run since taking out the Group 2 Angus Armanasco Stakes (1400m) narrowly at Caulfield on Ladbrokes Blue Diamond Stakes Day in late February and she was able to make it two on the trot dropping in distance.

Savanna Amour was settled off the pace in the last on Hollindale Stakes Day while the Team Hawkes-trained Crafty Crop led the field of three-year-olds around.

Also right up on the speed was the New Zealand raider Heroic Valour, the Stephen Autridge & Jamie Richards-trained Fastnet Rock colt down under for the first time after a number of top Group 1 runs back across the Tasman.

Heroic Valour was drawn wide, but pushed around to sit second throughout while the Tony Gollan-trained last start Doomben winning filly Tiyatrolani tracked in third ahead of the Peter & Paul Snowden-trained Attention.

On the home straight in the Guineas, Heroic Valour reached the lead but it was Savanna Amour flashing home down the outside who got the win in a tight late finish.

Also finishing off well in a late run was the third placed Tessera for Godolphin.

Next-up options for Savanna Amour include another run against the colts and geldings at Eagle Farm on May 27 in the Group 3 Fred Best Classic (1400m), while connections could also be eyeing the $350,000 Group 2 Queensland Guineas (1600m) on Stradbroke Handicap Day in June.
