Doomben 10,000 Hopes Head 2017 Victory Stakes Nominations

A line-up of potential 2017 Doomben 10,000 runners make up the Victory Stakes nominations for the early Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival lead-up at Eagle Farm Racecourse this weekend.

Saturday sees two Group status races take place at Eagle Farm including the $200,000 Group 2 Victory Stakes (1200m), which attracted 13 early entries.

Heading the nominees and the pre-nomination favourite at Ladbrokes.com.au for the $700,000 Group 1 Doomben 10,000 (1200m) on May 13 is the Matthew Dale-trained defending Victory Stakes winner Fell Swoop.

Fell Swoop won the weight-for-age race last year as the odds-on favourite on the back of a second to Chautauqua in the Group 1 TJ Smith Stakes (1200m) at Randwick during ‘The Championships’.

Twelve months on and the now five-year-old Not A Single Doubt gelding looks tough to beat again after a brave third to triple TJ Smith Stakes champ Chautauqua in the same lead-up on April 1.

The other best fancied sprinter in futures Doomben 10,000 betting entered for a Victory Stakes run on Saturday is the Gary Moore-trained Takedown.

Stratum four-year-old Takedown won the Group 1 Winterbottom Stakes (1200m) in Perth last November before a trip overseas when sixth in the Group 1 Hong Kong Sprint (1200m).

Takedown returned to racing in Australia with a second last to Redzel in the Group 3 Hall Mark Stakes (1200m) at Randwick on April 15 and this Saturday has him in Queensland for the first time since an unplaced Stradbroke Handicap run last winter.

Moore has the galloper on track for the Doomben 10,000 after Saturday as well as the updated BTC Cup race now run at Eagle Farm on May 27 over 1300m as the Group 1 Darley Kingsford-Smith Cup.

Known mudlark Jungle Edge has enjoyed a stellar autumn campaign on rain-affected Sydney tracks and his Cranbourne-based trainer Mick Bell has him entered for a maiden Brisbane run on the weekend.

The Dubawi six-year-old ran third in both the Group 1 The Galaxy (1100m) and Group 1 All Aged Stakes (1400m), with a Group 3 Star Kingdom Stakes (1200m) victory at Rosehill by two lengths between the two elite level placings.

Along with Takedown the other Group 1 winners nominated for the Victory Stakes this season are the Bjorn Baker-trained Music Magnate and Kelly Schweida’s locally-trained Monashee Mountain mare Miss Cover Girl.

Music Magnate saluted in last year’s Doomben 10,000 before a failed 16th in the Stradbroke Handicap, his latest run producing another disappointing effort when 12th in The Galaxy on March 18.

Miss Cover Girl meanwhile is first-up in the Victory Stakes, the reigning Group 1 Tattersall’s Tiara (1400m) winner out to improve on her last start 10th at the Gold Coast in mid-January’s Magic Millions QTIS race.

See below for full Victory Stakes 2017 nominations, the final field and barriers set for release on Wednesday followed by updated odds at Ladbrokes.com.au.
