The Championships Call Inglis Classic 2017 Winner Frolic

Local Randwick horseman Michael Freedman is eyeing the 1400m races for juveniles during April’s The Championships for his impressive 2017 Inglis Classic winner on Apollo Stakes Day Frolic.

The nicely-bred daughter of Husson had her third career start in the rescheduled $250,000 Restricted Listed Inglis Classic (1200m) on Monday breaking her maiden status.

She came off brave back-to-back seconds and a gear change suggested by hoop Tommy Berry saw her switch off beautifully in the Inglis Classic.

Berry had the filly minding her own business at the back of the pack letting a number of other two-year-olds do all the early work before flying down the outside for the length win over the brave Sweet Deal.

A John Thompson-trained daughter of Casino Prince, Sweet Deal backed up from a close third to another Freedman filly Teaspoon in the Group 3 Widden Stakes (1100m) on January 28.

She jumped well from the barriers on Monday and went out to settle up near the speed set by Junction.

Berry kept his filly at the back and was about five lengths from the front-runner as the bunched field of youngsters headed into the turn.

At the top of the straight Frolic was still last, while Sweet Deal sat third wide again as she did on debut hitting the front.

She was quickly joined by the flying Frolic ($7.50) who charged down the outside and the two went stride for stride for a moment, the favourite Sweet Deal ($2.30) showing great tenacity to fight back.

Frolic was just too strong having saved her energy during the run however and pushed forward with an exceptional turn of foot to win, Sweet Deal holding for second and the Kris Lees-trained Lets Get Nautical ($9.50) a notable margin away for third.

Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival options are now wide open for the progressive Frolic who will likely back-up in the $300,000 Group 2 Reisling Stakes (1200m) at Randwick on March 4.

Freedman will see how she pulls through the impressive Inglis Classic win, setting her on the path towards the $3.5 million Group 1 Golden Slipper Stakes (1200m) at Rosehill Gardens on March 18.

“It’s a big thrill,” he said post-win on Monday.

“I came here with a bit of confidence today with her.

“She’s got a great turn of foot and they’ve [the top two] have really spaced the others.

“I will see how she comes through and hopefully press onto a bit deeper into the autumn.

“We’ve got a few options so we’ll just see how she comes through today and then have a look at that [the Golden Slipper lead-up races].”

He is also keen to extend her out over further distance including a race like the $1 million ATC Inglis Sires’ (1400m) back at Randwick on April 1.

“I’ve always thought she’ll be even better when she gets out to 14 [hundred metres] and perhaps even a mile,” Freedman added.

“So we can have a look at a few of those races over The Championships.”

Berry has enjoyed two Golden Slipper winning rides aboard Overreach (2013) and Vancouver (2015) and was blown away by Frolic’s speed.

“She’s got an electrifying turn of foot,” the hoop said.
