Prince Of Penzance Tops 2016 Herbert Power Stakes Nominations
Nominations for the 2016 Ladbrokes Herbert Power Stakes were taken by Racing Victoria on Monday with the early entries for the Caulfield Cup qualifier led by reigning Melbourne Cup winner Prince Of Penzance.

One of a host of Group features highlighting the Caulfield Guineas Day card this weekend, the $400,000 Group 2 Ladbrokes Herbert Power Stakes (2400m) attracted 14 nominations.
Heading the Herbert Power Stakes entries and weights allocated 60kg is the Darren Weir-trained seven-year-old son of Pentire Prince Of Penzance.
The stayer is best known for his upset win in the ‘race that stops a nation’ last year when taking out the Group 1 Melbourne Cup (3200m) as a $101 roughie.
He has finished in the money just once since and was last seen running second last when ninth to stablemate Black Heart Bart in the Group 1 Underwood Stakes (1800m) on September 24.
Tracking towards a Cox Plate Day run in the $300,000 Group 2 Moonee Valley Gold Cup (2500m), Prince Of Penzance could improve sharply in the Herbert Power Stakes getting back out over a more suitable mile and a half distance.
Weir has a total of four stayers nominated for the Herbert Power Stakes this season, the winner of which is exempt from ballot for Saturday week’s Group 1 Caulfield Cup (2400m) back over the track and distance.
His other entries are SA Derby winner Howard Be Thy Name, French import Manndawi and fellow import Master Zephyr.
Leading the all-in Herbert Power Stakes odds at Ladbrokes.com.au on the nominated gallopers is Assign ($4) who will get into the field on the 53kg minimum.
Robert Hickmott’s six-year-old was last seen running second to Almandin in the Listed Harry White Classic (2400m) at the track a fortnight back.
Hickmott and master Spring Cups owner Lloyd Williams have a total of four entries with Assign joined by The United States, Gallante and Foundry.
The United States is the $5 second elect in futures Herbert Power Stakes betting and is allocated 59kg for the showdown.
His latest win was Rosehill’s Group 1 Ranvet Stakes (2000m) in the autumn and the seven-year-old stallion comes off a first-up sixth from early September in the Group 2 Dato’ Tan Chin Nam Stakes (1600m) at Moonee Valley.
Gallante won the Group 1 Sydney Cup (3200m) over the two miles back in April and resumed with a brave second to subsequent Turnbull Stakes runner-up Jameka in the Group 3 Naturalism Stakes (2000m) at Caulfield.
He is also nominated on Saturday for a run against champion mare Winx in the $600,000 Group 1 Ladbrokes Caulfield Stakes (2000m).
Foundry meanwhile has run third in both his runs this time in, but hasn’t raced in Group class since his 10th in Flemington’s Group 3 The Bart Cummings (2520m) 12 months ago.
Other notable nominees include Dandy Gent, the Ciaron Maher-trained Pemberley and Big Memory.
