One of the key support races on the Chelmsford Stakes Day line-up at Randwick Racecourse this afternoon in Sydney is the Tramway Stakes 2016, the post-scratchings betting for which is led by Dibayani.
Two horses have scratched out of this year’s $175,000 Group 2 Tramway Stakes (1400m), the set weights plus penalties clash running as Randwick Race 8 at 4:30pm (AEST).
A nine-starter field remains in the mix after the withdrawal of Messene (10) and Tim Martin’s class mare Heavens Above (3).
The David & Ben Hayes and Tom Dabernig-trained Dibayani is the now $4.20 favourite to win second-up following his second to Sooboog at Flemington in the Group 3 Aurie’s Star Handicap (1200m) from August 6.
The imported Shamardal seven-year-old drops back from 59kg that run to only 55kg for the Tramway, a big plus for the Group 1 performer who also has solid form on Heavy going from the start of his career in Ireland.
Dibayani may be yet to win down under, but he has plenty of placings in good races including his second to Winx in the Group 1 Chipping Norton Stakes (1600m) from late February.
It’s a wide open Tramway Stakes market with Dibayani followed by a host of other single-figure chances including the Chris Waller-trained Sadler’s Lake ($5), returning Queen Elizabeth Stakes third placegetter Happy Clapper ($5) and Randwick Guineas champ from the autumn Le Romain ($5.50).

1st
#5 Sadler’s Lake ($5)
In an open field Waller’s High Chaparral gelding looks a winning hope with the good form on Heavy going (3-1-1-0). The mud track is the big advantage for the five-year-old who is two runs in and has a good second-up record (4-2-1-0). His return produced a second over 1400m at Rosehill when only a length off Testashadow from August 13, has had the freshen-up since then and is two-from-three over this track and distance. Also comes back from 59.5kg to 56.5kg this afternoon so ticks plenty of boxes for the Group win.
2nd
#1 Le Romain ($5.50)
Kris Lees’ now four-year-old gives the weight away with 58kg, but has plenty of class. Got the rails run first-up for a second in the Group 3 Show County Quality (1200m) at Randwick and is drawn the inside alley again. He has great form at Randwick (4-2-2-0) and is also a proven Heavy track performer having won here on a Heavy (8) – also from barrier one – back in January. Group 1 winner, distance suits and only needs to handle the kilos to win.
3rd
#9 Dibayani ($4.20)
The money coming for Dibayani is deserving looking at the Lindsay Park-raced import’s first-up run. He’ll improve off that with good second-up form (5-1-2-2) and as a Group 1 runner-up over the mile the extra meters also suit. Has form around Winx so is classy, doesn’t know how to win but can run a place with the drop in weights off his resuming run in Melbourne.
